I currently have no Internet connection apart from the 3G I'm using right now. This means that I have to run steam in offline mode. Certain games work like this, but others return 'This operation cannot be completed in offline mode'.

Games that work:
HL2
HL2: Lost Coast
Bioshock
MW2
TF2
CS:S

Games that don't work:
Portal
HL2:Ep1
HL2:Ep2

Any suggestions?

So... You have chosen not to reply. But is this really the life you want? Would you not be fulfilled by the sense of achievement earned by helping another escapist to satisfy his gaming desires? I leave it to you...

I suppose it depends. Have the three that don't work been fully downloaded? Do they have updates which haven't been fully installed?
Or maybe Steam's just throwing a hissy. Who knows.

Can't you just start them off online, using 3G, but then turn the internet off. So's not to run up a huge mobile broadband bill?

I hate bumps! I had this problem, I never sorted out, but it only occurred on my laptop. Have you asked Steam support, they are VERY fast and usually very helpful.

You, good sir, win.

Anyway, another question:
Have you ever done anything with the games that don't work?

You know, outside of when steam first launched (and those days where fun : / ) I've never had a single problem with it. My internet is fairly unreliable around here and my games work offline or on just the same.

It is probably because those games have been updated recently, and they weren't fully updated, so it cannot play them.

You have all chosen the right path, and for that I will impart the following knowledge that I just acquired through the medium of memory: I may not have run the offending games on the computer in question since I installed them.

By 3G I meant the connection on my phone, which isn't much use on steam.

Ohh, but you could connect to the internet via your phone...
