It's fun reading the pro-Apple comments on the news article, and how they completely miss the point of it.

One comment on there deserves reposting, though:

Basically Apple is forcing people to upgrade their computers simply to use or even merely put music on another independent device.

No state-of-the-art technology is needed to do such a thing. On all of my phones and mp3 players, you plug in the USB (no special adapter needed) and drag your music onto the device. No drivers or program needed. Nothing.

And none of the devices needed me to phone home to get authorisation before I could use them either.

The issue is not "spend the damn 30 quid", the issue is that Apple?s whole system is designed to keep you on the treadmill buying more, simply because they have decided it is time for their tithe.

Even Windows XP, which is over 5 years old, can work with the latest version of iTunes. The Mac can't unless you pay extra money to Apple for a new O.S.

lol I wont even get an iphone. i have an older creative Zen mp3 player with 4gb internal memory and a 32 gb expansion card so far it plays any song or video i put on it and does what its supposed to do perfectly; play videos or music. my phone i have a plain nokia razer and it does calls perfectly fine. and for portability... i have a netbook running windows xp. I did use an ipad this weekend and all i can say is... no thanks ill keep my netbook, it has a keyboard and no limitations like google street view didnt work on the ipad.

Get the iPad 2. You can facetime with all your Apple friends, it has a dual core, plus a lot of iOS games are unmissable.

Umm No way. had 2 different ipads in the house this weekend. had no interest in owning either and facetime? lol what? is that like facebook or something? if it is i dont have an account or will ever have one.

He is trying to introduce new technology to an operating system which is incapable of recognizing it because it lacks the features to work with it. To fall off this treadmill, you would need to be paralyzed from the waist down because he had FOUR YEARS to get something newer. They've been using Tiger (10.4) for four years, and it's only NOW they realize it cannot do something they want it to do. Aside from the most recent versions of the Nano (Gen 6), Touch (Gen 4), and Shuffle (Gen 4), all other iPods work with Tiger.

I am able to relate to their experience. Two years ago, I was using a 5+ year-old hand-me-down Macbook that had only 256MB of RAM. I found out that my 3rd Gen iPod Nano didn't work with Panther (10.3) and I needed Tiger (10.4) or better and I had a Leopard install disc with four more uses, but in order to install this new OS, I needed at least one gigabyte of RAM and the original Macbbok G4 came with only 256MB. Solution: I bought a 1GB RAM stick and installed Leopard and was then able to get my Nano to work with my laptop instead of the house computer. Every G4-era Mac can run Leopard as long as they have 1GB of RAM.

Today, I have a Macbook Pro which runs Snow Leopard, which was released in June 2009, and it will be able to run Tiger (10.7) when it comes out (wow this treadmill is so fast NOT). Leopard is still a great Mac OS that is armed to the teeth with various applications and still runs all external hardware that Apple has released to date, including all iPods, iPhones (needed 10.5 since 3GS), and even the iPad (both only run on 10.5 or newer). I can see people still not having Snow Leopard since you need an Intel Mac to run it, but still using anything lower than 10.5 in 2011 while still having the cash to throw around for the latest iPhone is inexcusable, and bitching about it only shows he did not read the instructions. They all have the minimum required OS needed to use all of this stuff on the main Apple site, for fucks sake.

Within the next year or two, I expect Apple to release new versions of their gadgets that cannot continue progressing without sacrificing Leopard or non-Intel Mac support. Technology waits for nobody, and if you get left behind, tough luck.

The only Apple product I own is an iPod Touch, and I'm proud of the fact. However, even that suffers the taint of their relentless cash-grabbing--you can only watch videos on the internet via Youtube, because they've struck a deal with Apple. Vimeo and any site that uses its own video hosting is worthless on an iPod or iPhone.

The point is, the bastards will do whatever they can to maximize profits at the expense of their customers, which is why I only buy their products when I have obvious evidence that they're superior to the alternatives.

Tiger was EOLed a long time ago. If they haven't upgraded yet they are far behind the curve. Its like complaining that IE9 doesn't work on XP SP2. You've been deprecated for awhile now, get over it.

I do like the Apple products that I own, and I do plan to continue buying them in the future, but I think this was a very poor business choice. I have heard numerous accolades about Apple's service and care for each customer (I can also attest to this), and I've heard lots of praise about how durable their products are and how long they last.

And those people who have the old stuff are a testament to that. They use their old machines and products because they've still got plenty of life left. The quality of the product has stood the test of time. That is the point of a large investment--you spend a lot upfront so it lasts that much longer. For Apple to drop those products, even though the company is richer than God, it completely undermines that aspect of their marketing, and totally invalidates any sort of faith their customers have in the lasting power of their purchases.

I might just send an email to Apple tonight. This is just sad. I hope they turn this around at once.

This made my day, thank you! I mean, you didn't have much to compete against ... moving 5 tons of stone blocks and taco pie, then this. That image wins. I'm very ant-imac. I think owning apple-anything makes you look ignorant of how much you're spending for something that might work, but gives problems such as the op's message. Macs advertise that they don't take much to run and they start instantly. Wrong. Macs get just as bogged down just as quickly as pc with installed software. I won't even start on flash [idiotic to attempt to quit it cold turkey]

BUT! I will say other mp3 players do the SAME thing with firmware updates that make the machine completely unusable.

My old Macbook from 2005 has Leopard and can work with all iPods, the iPhone G4, and even the new iPad. It is installed on all non-Intel Macs on the main Apple site. What you just said would make sense if it was some revolutionary new technology that the 4 year old Macs couldn't run. But we're talking about iTunes and some phones and MP3 players. To try and justify needing a new OS just for that is taking fanboyism to an extreme that I've never even seen from the most diehard Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo fanboys when it comes to video games. Again, we're talking about software that manages a god damned media library. If it can run on Windows XP, a nearly 10 year old operating system, but not "Tiger", which is just over 6 years old, then there's a massive problem there.

And I'll say it one last time. They're trying to run media library management software on a 4 year old MacBook, not an iMac G3 from 1998.

I haven't posted in these forums for nearly a year now but I needed to log back in just to reply to this thread.

All of the Apple hate here is, frankly, very unnecessary. They are a business and they wish to make money; a lot of companies do the exact same thing. Apple is not despicable simply because they do not want to continue to support ancient software. The user can either accept this ultimatum and spend the (honestly, very little) money to upgrade to a newer OS, or they can remain in the past and unsupported.

I really don't see the problem here.

When a company thinks something a mere 5 years old is obsolete (and, by the way, thinks that service pack style upgrades like "Snow Leopard" and "Lion" should be sold to the consumer instead of provided free of charge; don't ask for more money until you've got Mac OS 11 ready. You don't see Microsoft charging $30 for Windows 7 service pack 1, but yet they're the ones who get a stupid dollar sign placed in their name?!), I want nothing to do with them.

Especially when part of the draw of their massive prices for those computers is "They're future proof, get it now and use it for years and years and years!" Hmm. Or I could spend less money building my own computer, putting Windows on it, and not having to pay $30 for an OS upgrade just to keep running a piece of software that handles the extremely advanced task of managing a media library.

And you're right, no sense arguing with anyone who would actually defend such an awful business practice.
