Alright, Duke Nukem Forever, the biggest delayed game joke this side of Episode 3... is soon not going be a joke.

So I'm wondering, do you think the focus has changed since the late 90s, I mean obviously the engine has changed and the game itself changed hands, but how much of the original Duke Nukem Forever do you think exists in the game we're getting now.

Has Duke embraced current FPS trends or is he sticking to his own, and if so, will the mechanics seem archaic?

What say you on this?

For some comparison, let's see the 1998 trailer:
And now, the 2010 one:

I'm imagining a kind of left field fusion of lots of current FPS style with something insane, a painkiller/serious sam shot of craziness and homage to the earlier days of FPS. Probably not a groundbreaking game by any means, but good, unique, unadulterated fun.

From what I remember, the game was delayed for so long because the lead designer kept on seeing what other FPSs were doing in the mean-time and then tried to put those in the game. So, I think it will embrace at least some current FPS standards, but how much remains to be seen.

After the more than 12 years od hype it's gotten, it would have to be groundbreaking to avoid disappointing people.
I'm assuming some people will ***** about it, but I too expect that it'll be fun.

God... watching that '98 trailer again makes me realize...

12 years of waiting was a GOOD thing. Looks like it was damn well worth it too.

I never knew there was a 1998 trailer. The only one I'd seen was that thing they faked up (using the Unreal engine I believe) to convince everyone they were doing something.

Interesting to see it. Duke '98 looks like Duke 3D meets Half Life. Duke '10 (or '11) looks like Doom 3. Maybe it's just the low resolution video, but it all looks a bit too low tech, especially compared to the trailers that are circulating for the likes of Brink and Crysis 2.

If the gameplay is as dated as the visuals this could be a nostalgia/curiosity buy only.

And oh god, there's a vehicle section...

It's an FPS... there's always a vehicle session.

After watching both trailers.....

I notice the following about 2010:
No Women
No Boot
All the lines are stupid copies of the originals, like they forgot what he said in Duke 3d or some shit.
FUCKING VEHICLE SECTION.

But you know what I noticed most?

REGENERATING HEALTH!
The scourge of modern gaming.

Fuck this new one, it is NOT a Duke Nukem Game, Not by a longshot.
I kind of feel like you.

Dukes about saving babes and getting them to "shake it baby"

I can't wait to buy this for my Dad regardless, he's been waiting for as long as i can remember.

I've never been a duke nukem fan in my life, and it looks like I'm not going to start now either.
The music alone and the one-liners look enough to make me want to stop playing half and hour into the game.

that's definitely a space marine line in starcraft... haha.(not saying its copying, just saying that it's a good line for him and spacemarines to use)

I kinda want it to be bad.

Now hold your horses before you flame, I have a reason here. Bad was said a bit rashly, but I dont want it to end up like every other modern FPS. I want it to be so bad, so stuck in its generic, run in guns blazing, no cover, not taking itself seriously, early 90's roots that is just incredible fun because of it. Like watching a bad movie thats so bad its good. that sort of thing.

Besides would just be the best punchline to the biggest joke in gaming so far

The game that took over 12 years to develop is 12 years behind the rest of the curb?
That would be hilarious!

I do know one thing: the weapons system is more akin to that of consoles as opposed to old-fashioned PC shooters. That is to say, press B to pick up shotgun.
If he can only carry two guns that will ruin the game for me, seriously DUKE NUKEM IS NOT REALISTIC WHY SHOULD HE BE CONSTRAINED BY REALISM!!??!?!?!?!? WTF!?!?!?!

The first thing I noticed is that the 2010 one has way less lens flare. It also looks like they cut the movement speed in half, which is another sad consequence of consolization of an FPS (which also makes me very concerned about Bulletstorm, because I was hoping for a return to the awesomeness of the first Painkiller...). It just seems too serious and not ridiculous/goofy/over-the-top enough to be the real Duke. I bet he doesn't even have balls of steel...

It took 12 years to make a dull FPS with a protagonist that delivers non-clever one liners. Oh boy, can't wait to blow $60 on this, cause it bleeds originality out of every pore.

The '98 trailer looked reminiscent of Half-Life 1, while on the contrary, the trailer from 2010 looks reminiscent of Half-Life 2.
Its interesting too see how one game has adapted through a constantly changing and evolving genre.
