Oh God, it's Jeff Gerstman all over again. (Gamespot Skyward Sword review)

The only thing that does strike me as odd is how nearly all of the other reviews praise the controls, while Gamespot's review criticizes it.

Still 7,5 is a good score, so I hope people won't explode when they read this. Though I'm sure they will, seeing as how Gamespot keeps giving MW games high scores despite them being nearly identical to each other.

Anyway, fair review. Wish they'd do it more often.

Very surprising review and one that has successfully diminished my hype given how genuine and honest it came across.

Sites like IGN praise the games pacing and controls as feeling nearly perfect. Escapist and Gamespot mention them as frustrating or wonky. If the game controls poorly from my personal experience, it'll likely turn out to be a huge disappointment and easily fall within one of the worst zelda games.

I fully intend to maintain my pre-order, and look forward to playing it for myself on Monday or Tuesday.

Just gone through the trope page the OP linked and dear god i'd heard tales of how bad IGN and Gamespot are but christ that page takes the piss.

I never read reviews anyway, except the occasional Escapist review when i'm really bored...

BRB going through all the mystery tropes again

I played a demo of this (with the release version, not a beta one) and I personally like Twilight Princess's controls better.

It was intuitive enough, yes, but the CONTROLS were messed up. Pressing lock-on but not locking on or facing forward, wonky movement at a couple of key times, stuff like that. Minor, but still very breaking in the immersion that is brought from the Wiimote controls.

So, I guess, the controls are coolish, but I liked Twilight Princess's more and would like to see a merging of the two.

Maybe they do suck at the controls. We have no real way to judge that short of watching them play. It just sounds dismissive to suggest that the low scores are attributed to lack of applicable skill.

It's also possible some people are more readily impressed by shiny new things. Looking back at the early days of Wii games, I'd say it's pretty likely.
Wii's controls aren't new and shiny anymore, though. Your argument falls flat based solely on the fact that we already have a Zelda title with the same control scheme. I enjoyed Twilight Princess, partially because the controls were new and interesting at the time, but mostly because Nintendo knows how to make things flow together nicely.

Or, and I know this is going to sound crazy, the people praising it are glossing over flaws because it's Zelda.
The reviewers who give good reviews to Skyward Sword don't gloss over the controls, which seems to be the crux of the division, though. In fact, most of the ones I've seen praise the controls specifically as being an intuitive part of the game. That's not so much ignoring due to nostalgia as? actually, the opposite of that. Highlighting something specifically for not being the same as their old Zelda memories.

The coolest reaction to this story is one of disinterest.

And that is the path I shall take.

I really don't give a flying fuck what the reviews say; I'm still buying Skyward Sword no matter what. But one semi-decent review doesn't mean the entire game is mediocre. It just means one dude didn't like it. Big whoop.

Well the infamous Gerstman incident was actually the events following his "meh" score of Kane and Lynch 2; Twilight Princess had nothing to do with the controversy surrounding him and Gamespot. But anyway...

I was very surprised to see that, and honestly it seems strange that one of the "big boys" in game journalism would be that one random review that didn't like the masterpiece (speaking on a broad level; there's always just a few dissenters with these things). Having not played the game yet, I personally question the logic on some of what they said about it, but I'll have to see in more details when I actually get my hands on it.

Their rating scale is different from other reviewers and an appropriate contrast.

It should really not be judged on a percentage scale. But rather on a scale of how much they enjoyed it.

5 stars - OMFG AMAZING
4 stars - Game was good
3 stars - Okay I guess
2 stars - Not good
1 star - FUCK THIS GAME

That's the way it should be.
You should check out Giant Bomb then. They do a five point scale and it's more based on the reviewers experience with the game and less trying to judge everything on the same scale. The content of the review is what counts there and they have some pretty insightful reviewers.

I thought posting that implied that I did already. I really like Giant bomb. :)
Oh...I kind of feel stupid now. Buy yeah, that's one of my favorite game sites, next to this one. ^_^

If you watch the review, the score is appropriate for his comments. I disagree with certain points he makes, and I didn't have one of the control issues he mentioned, but based on his experience, it's a fair score. Where he sees repetitious elements, I see the game staying true to its roots. He hated flying around Skyloftt, but I really enjoyed it. We saw the same things, just with different perspectives. People will freak out over the score, which is a shame, because it's a fair review.

I don't see the comment section to the gamespot review article. No use for popcorn unless I see rage comments flooding the site.

God, numbers don't mean anything anymore. I have no idea what a 7.5 from this guy means.
...
Well, I can tell from the opening paragraph that we just flat out disagree. I actually liked the sailing in Wind Waker, so I'm sure I'll have no problems.

I'm confused by this Gerstman thing. I've never even heard of the guy or his review so I can't speak specifically to it, but I can say I bought Twilight Princess the day it came out, then beat it in a depressingly short amount of time, but enjoyed it. That sounds like a 7.5 - 8.5 game to me, I'd hold onto that 8.8 for dear life if I was you
