...about how we've been seeing a lot of a particular thread lately... we've been seeing a lot of those lately.

Especially in the gaming forum. All it takes is for a sequel to be released or a news article to bring up an older game and then BAM, someone has to post in every thread about how there are a lot of threads about that series or the game. It could be the first or second reply, or on the second page, but someone usually puts it there.

So... what up with that? Are people deriving enjoyment from pointing out the obvious? I'm giving that a shot and it doesn't seem very fun. Maybe they think they're performing a needed public service? What is it already? Why do people feel the need to point out that a specific topic is popular in a thread about that topic?

Oh great....ANOTHER thread complaining about the forum :p

...it had to be done.

Anyway, I think that some people get sick of certain topics but for whatever reason, their OCD forces them to post in every thread. I'm not sure why people haven't realized that if they want Topic XYZ to go away, they need to stop posting in threads XYZ...

Gotta get dem post counts up!

OT: It's pretty much an endless cycle on the internet. Not really specific to here, to be honest. People still complain about how much Halo is talked about; you know the last time I saw a Halo topic was probably back when 4 released? Wait, maybe there was DoPo's thread asking what it was all about too, but that's it. And discussion of 4 only lasted about a week.

It's not necessarily that people feel a need to post in every thread. It's that we'd like to have /something/ that isn't the current posting fad. We don't currently have a big one, but the feminism threads, and the Mass Effect 3 threads before that, and the "why do people like My Little Pony?" threads before that, and the piracy vs. used games threads before that, and the... (on back to the dawn of the site) got really old. Sites with enforced search bar rules don't have that problem. This site used to have, if not a rule, a userbase that kind of self enforced it, but for some reason it switched from being rude not to use the search bar to being rude to tell someone they should have used it somewhere around the time of the pony threads.

I do kind of miss the search bar reminder. An over saturation of one kind of thread always seems to make everyone irritable here. Of course, when we did that there were people who would go back and revive threads that had died years ago. I always figured that if the thread is past the page 20 limit, you're safe to start a new one.

Mods do merge threads from time to time now but I suppose they would do it more often if they were informed about the similar threads in their group. The Escapist just got huge is all and the old world values of keeping a variety of topics around instead of just one giant trend seems to have faded away.

People comment about the types of threads. You comment about those comments. I comment about that. So this would be a meta-meta-meta comment?

I'm a meta-meta-meta-meta-meta-chameeeeeeleeeeeeon! [/bad singing voice]

OT: This isn't unique to the Escapist, or anywhere else. Anything people have feelings about, they bring up over and over and over. This guy at my work would turn ANY conversation towards how George Bush Senior was the best president ever, and/or how niggers (his word, not mine) were a race of born criminals ruining America. Those were the only two things he really cared about, so every conversation had to be about them.

No matter how much I don't post, sh*t threads keep happening.

(I have had an escapist account since 2008, now look at my post count.)

Well fight fire with even more powerful fire :)

If people don't like the threads that are currently in rotation, create your own super-awesome thread. Then, start inserting subliminal messages into said thread that has attracted the eyes of the site. Once everyone has been properly indoctrinated, you can now use it to make people stop creating threads you don't like.

Boom; problem solved. I'll take my Nobel Peace Prize in cash please. You're welcome Escapist.

I suppose barring that, just go into the threads that do interest you. There are thousands of the things, I'm sure one of them tickles your fancy.

Oh DoPo, you blew a wide open joke! :p

Instead of saying please, you should have used "would you kindly"! :)

All well, you're forgiven. To make you feel better, I brought you some coffee and cookies...not sure why but I felt that you would really want some.
