I've gotta go with the idea of characters that are hard to zombify and would actually help protect you.
KOS-MOS from Xenosaga for twin triple-barreled Gatling-gun action. Not hard on the eyes either.
Master Chief or Gorden Freeman could possibly stop the whole apocalypse by themselves. But Gorden is always leaving his head exposed.
And finally Planescape: Torment's Fall-from-Grace. Turn undead plus potential for repopulation (even if they're plane-touched).

Superman I guess. Superman is one of those characters that never lets his allies die. I guess him or Captain America, or some other golden age superhero that cannot lose.
Kratos would be just about the worst person to bring along with you. There'd be a 20 second pause between tearing apart zombies and he'd get bored and just decide to bash your skull into a bloody mess for the hell of it.
