The onion reports that university people taught a gorilla that it will die.

It's hte onion, so time to turn on your LOL dar. But it made me think about how humans fancy themselves unique becuase we can think into the abstract future where other animals can't. What if an animal did realize it would die? I consider this actually to be cruelty to animals. Let them live in ignorance. Remember the addage: "You're a child until you realize that someday, you will die."

The Onion has my respect for making an absolute ass of Hillary Clinton (she believed one of their stories).

Which one? Did she try quoting something they said as fact?

oh man, i used to love the onion. I think my favourite ever article was "terrorist extremely annoyed by delayed flight" but yeah, OT: i think animals are lucky in their ignorance of their own mortality.

The Funny thing about this is that chimps and gorillas do already have some concept of death, as evidenced by them mourning those recently departed.

How do you know animals don't know they will die? Why else would they run away from danger?

I'm sorry but I'm almost certain that is a joke (I can't be certain until the people who made it say so) just like that massive water slide jump video.

Instinct, or pain, or both. I'm not saying that can't understand it mind you, these are just other explanations.

I realized I'd die as a kid, I think when I get closer to it I'll become more in denial. Point being to me it was the knowledge of the world other than just me that made me an adult. (well being able to perceive the world beyond me, anyway)

Nice video though, was learning about language and such in Psychology and Anthropology, specifically about this which was quite interesting.

The bee is the animal closest to having human language (allegedly).

I don't remember which one (I THINK it had to do with women's rights), but yes, she quoted it as fact.
