Yesterday I found out that while I wasn't looking they updated Half Life 2. A ten year old game.
I mean, it wasn't even that long ago I played it before and now a really massive patch, nay UPDATE made all sorts of improvements from small level design tweaks to achievements. That they would support such an old yet worthy game is quite cool, unlike modern pc titles that are ignored a week in despite massive errors.

They're working on Portal 2, keeping Steam running, converting games to consoles and possibly even Half Life 2: Episode 3, so they're not being lazy.

And for the record. It's Valve. Just one capital letter, not four. Sure, in their logo, the E is smaller, and then it's still upper case, but you're typing their name, not their logo - don't be annoying.

They have multiple projects to work on such as Portal 2 and Half-Life: Episode 3.

There is also the fact that you will rarely see games actively updated with new content regularly over four years that isn't pay to play or on some micro-transaction model from the beginning.

I'm sorry that opening the Steam application and double-clicking on the game you want to play is not easy enough.

Oh that sounds rude........... that's just my situation (Guess I'm blessed?). What's wrong on your end?
Well half the problems come in when doing the first part and trying to open the Steam application. Last month I was getting errors that have been around for six years. Six years! Jesus, you'd they'd they'd at least TRY to bugfix. All the fun of messing around with my registry, yay.

The other half come in playing the games. "This game cannot be played in offline mode" well FUCK YOU too, maybe I don't actually HAVE an internet connection at the moment you cockends. Thank God for MiSteam/MiSteam Prep. Not to mention the updates to single player games can render them unplayable if I can't afford the download.

And yes, you sounded very rude.
You are the only person I know of that ever gets errors when you open the steam program... sounds more like a problem with your computer.

You can play games in offline mode with steam if you know how to do it, JUST LOOK IT UP.
Actually at one point I had a problem where Steam decided it had to update at the same time as I lost my internet connection. I was unable to play any games using Steam until I got my connection back a few days later and it was actually able to update.

I would agree if TF2 was half, maybe a year old. But its almost 4 years old.

Compare this to the lifespan of, I dunno, any other shooter, lets say Call of Duty. And you will notice that Valve is quite generous.

Valve has pretty much openly stated that TF2 is an experimentation game for them, it's the place where they test new ideas to their community and react to that with their in-development projects, which are currently DotA2, Portal 2 would technically be finished by this point.
I'm sure once Portal 2 is released and had a successful launch, we'll start seeing press releases for another project maybe 1-2 months after Portal 2 has died down.

Valve always takes their time, but all developers that do this usually release quality, Blizzard does it, Valve does it, Bioware does it.

Well they may not be releasing much, but they are doing work, sadly a good chunk of people is required only for Steam.
And with the Steam cash flow they really aren't pressed for time on any of their games so they can keep working on them or shelve them as the mood strikes.

They essentially became Blizzard, once WoW took off they haven't released sh*t apart from updates, and SC2 one Activision had them at gun point, otherwise it would still be in development.

Has anyone else noticed that since Valve brought in the Mannconomy system, that they've been doing next to no work? Most updates after that have been from the community, and it's really pathetic, especially considering how much they made off the Mannconomy, you'd think they could put a little more manpower into it.
Keep in mind that TF2 launched in 2007 (which was, as you know, a little over three years ago). Can you think of any OTHER game still receiving near constant updates in it's fourth year on shelves? Most companies would have abandoned the game in favor of a sequel a long time ago.

Besides, think of everything else they are/have been doing: Portal 2, HL2: Ep. 3, DotA 2, PS3 support, constant support for L4D2, constant work maintaining Steam... I'd say that those supposedly lazy developers have enough on their hands and can afford to let the community make the updates for a little while.

Also, please, stop mentioning episode 3, portal 2, dota 2 or whatever. Those are made by different teams unrelated to TF2 people.

Valve has been supporting Team Fortress 2 with new content and updates for over three years for free. The fact that you're complaining that you haven't had enough free stuff from the studio recently is mind boggling, honestly.

Making things takes time. My personal favorite, Bungie, releases a big new game usually every 3 years. ODST being the little expansion that Microsoft overpriced.

And as people have said the TF2 updates, while trying to get your money, still come with free new stuff. To get any new stuff in almost any other game you'll probably have to pay to get any of it.

It's about time they release a new game though so I look forward to taking Portal 2 for a spin. The first one was great but one of the shortest games I've ever played. Yeah quality over quantity and all that but I hope they can give something a bit more substantial this time.

I have a question for people:

How on god's green earth did the Mannconomy ruin the game? Valve can get some more money to help fund projects and community members who have had their items/maps released for the game can earn some money from it.

Anyway, as people have said, Valve isn't that big of a studio, they have the kick-arse-ness that is Portal 2 on the way.

Dude, they have always been like that. Between Half-Life and HL2, i.e. 6 years, they've released NOTHING of their own - just stuff made by the community, repackaged and resold. Actually they haven't done anything else after HL2 either (although I have respect for Portal).
Nothing?

Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Portal 2
Alien Swarm

Still nothing?

Yeah, but as I've said before, Valve aren't that big of a studio, I'd say that they have 4 teams in total (total guess here, but an educated one)

Half-Life/Portal
Left 4 Dead/Alien Swarm/DOTA 2 I'd imagine
Team Fortress 2
Steam

They have a lot of stuff going on, and possibly not enough people for everything to go as smoothly as you'd want.

im sorry, but F&%$ TF2, valve has plenty of other projects that arent years old to focus their attention on; like a certain expansion pack to a certain FPS that im sure most are sick of hearing about by now.

TF2 has actually been slowing down, sadly. The servers have been full for shorter and shorter periods of time (at least in the servers of my little community). I recall that VALVe promised quite a few more updates, one being the engineer update after another update (the MANN STORE update, so this was quite a while ago) so rest assured that they will deliver. How much they deliver is up in the air.
