I love riffs. Riffs are what make a song a song. Without a riff all you'd have is a lead and a bass and a drum, not a song.

So gimme some riffs and debate what's the best riff

I'll start this shit off with a oldie but a classic

Protest the Hero - Sequoia Throne

That intro riff blows my mind. It isn't even complicated; I just love it for some reason.

A 'riff' is the 'hook' of a newspaper article to a song, so to speak. To simplify it even further, it is designed to be catchy and unique; since most songs contain, on average, four or five chords, you've got to have a solo line that is reminiscent throughout the whole song to give it a unique feel.

For example, say my song is based on a G-D-Am-C chord progression. You could play random strings from the corresponding triad, and as long as you keep that theme throughout the song, you've got yourself a riff.

Maybe it's just my celtic roots, but I can't get enough of that song.

I thought lyrics were what made a song a song, as opposed to an instrumental piece. If guitar riffs are the be-all and end-all, doesn't that mean Dragonforce should rule the world right now? I like their music, but not to the exclusion of riffless pieces (like, say, a lot of the J-pop I listen to).

For me, I love Cowboys from Hell by Pantera [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_WZkCgeXWk] Some quality guitar playing. You cant sit still while listening to it.

Or maybe

Angel of Death by Slayer [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0AGUywHntw]. When the riff comes in at 1:39 it rips your face off. Best thing ever written on a guitar.

Dragon force can't make riffs for shit. All they do for riffs is power chords in only like 3 places on the guitar. That makes them sound too much like Iron Maiden, a much better band.

This is stoner metal dude. The bong on the album art is a dead giveaway, still, nice riff man.

stoner doom if you want to be super-technical about it. I lump stoner and doom together because they have a lot of the same thematic elements throughout.

I love that song. It got me into PTH about a year ago, and I've never looked back.

Actually that's lyrics. Without lyrics it's just an instruental.

As for decent riffs:

Wait for the intro riff to come in.

I just like all the riffs in this song.
