Remember when you first bought your computer? it seemed fast right? well, if you've had it for more then 50% of it's usage lifespan then the most likely situation is it now moves like an old lady with a hip replacement. this is in fact annoying, frustratingly so.
if you have reached the depth of the degredation despare, then during word processing you may even have a considerable delay between pressing the key, and it's appearance on the screen.

I don't know about you, but i remember letters appearing as you hit keys being a feature that predates windows 95. This is clearly unacceptable.
And the startup-login times are perhaps the thing most brutally affected by the horrors of computer degredation, its not in your mind people, it's not nostalgia from when your pc was shiny. It really did start that fast back then.

I think there should be a special section of hell for people who release software that demands to automatically activate itself upon the computer being logged in. with a VIP room for the makers of software that runs permanently in the background, leaving their presense unannounced and undeactivatable.

So i propose a new rule of thumb, when you buy a new computer or install a new OS, time its startup from power button to happily sitting there, logged in ready to go (aka, folders and browsers open without delay.). this time is now your reference point, check your time every couple of months, if it ever reaches the point where it takes over 30 seconds more then your reference time, then it is time for action.

when the time comes, get all files you can't bear to lose off that rickety barge and reformat the hdd for the love of pizza! then do a fresh install. by refusing to accept these little bastards of programs, perhaps we will send some kind of message that they are not welcome.
If not, at least your computer will be ship shape.

EDIT: if you don't know how to do this stuff, ask someone with experience for advice, they shouldn't be annoyed, at least not when it saves them wading through your built up computer crud when something inevitablly goes wrong.

I try to last it out for as long as I can before I do a big reformat. When I do get around to it - and once I have all the drivers/basic programs installed - and reboot; I get almost as excited as when I bought the pc the first time.

These days I have a second hard drive to dump my essential files on during a reformat.

you can seperate the one hard drive into multiple partitions which you can reformat individually. its pretty hard to use a terabyte of space so i doubt most people would care some of its gone anyway.

What stuff you have running that could cause it to clog up so much? I've never encountered such speed loses from my computer due to my software.

Also if one of your problems is stuff like Adobe PDF updating at launch you can just stop such programs from launching on startup. Also what OS you running? cause if it is vista that's half your problem right there.

it's not my problem anymore, as i know how to deal with it.
it's more other peoples computers that i get asked to look at on occasion, not impressed am I.
And about your comment on vista, I agree completely, but I never used that program myself.

Fair enough. Yeah the problem with vista is it loads EVERYTHING on launch before you even get the log in screen, the best thing that 7 changed is that it will only launch functions once they are called upon. Its amusing to see vista and 7 launch side by site, I can be logged in then all the way into a game before vista hits the log in screen.

I have had this setup since my last reformat a few months back. The problem now is that all that BS adware my family installs builds up on the other partitions. Still, its great to know I can reformat without backing everything up on externals and then moving it back over.

Familys are the natural enemy of computers, im sure you can just run antivirus software though.

It's called regular maintenance. I do it with my car, I do it with my computers. I have no problems.

If you're really desperate, boot up from a read-only disk image. It will work the same way, every damn time, forever.

I haven't noticed any drastic speed decreases with my computer, although it is getting slower, but I just need to do more clean up and maintenance.

One of the most true statements I've ever heard. It especially sucks when you have a little brother who has a bad habit of downloading tons of random games and programs that love to run in the background.
