I have been kicking around the idea for about a year or so, and I've finally decided that there needs to be two equal but completely different "best of the best" awards from now on in any legitimate gaming awards show. Those are the GOTY (game of the year) and SOTY (story of the year).

Why? So that games can be recognized more easily for what they want to be. For example, lets use two games: Heavy Rain and FTL. Heavy rain has been complimented almost universally for having a damn amazing story, but not so much for the game mechanics. FTL, on the other hand, is loved for its rogue-like type gameplay with it being slightly turn-based in the way that you can pause whenever you wish, but basically has no story. Both of these games are amazing in their own ways, but fall short in other ways. Both deserve recognition, but can be picked apart far too much for some to consider them best of the best.

Of course, this doesn't stop devs from creating good stories with good mechanics, but it does provide more room for good games to be recognized. Of course, there should still be a "best of the best award", but there should also be awards for best mechanics and best story.

What games are trying to be? Maybe a new subset, but I definitely do not want every developer to take advice from a game that had a fucking 2 minute homework scene.

Ha! The only award I'd give Heavy Rain is the "crappy movie masquerading as a game award"
Yeah, I mean cage basically just took CSI and slammed it together with taken and added a dash of SAW and drastically watered down every story.

But that's apparently okay because drama.

There usually is a best story/writing award, like "best narrative design" or something, at least that's what it is at the DICE awards I think.

Or alternatively, stop trying to make "At least you tried" awards and give the GOTY awards to games that have a great story and great game play, that's what it's for isn't it?
