Before I get accused for flaming, I want to say that I'm not. I just want to understand exactly what makes God Games (like the Sims, etc. if I'm using the wrong term, please let me know) appealing? I've played Lionhead's "The Movies" (as I'm told, not really the best example of the genre) and a bit of Black and White...well, I don't get it. I found myself being moderately amused by some of the action going on while mostly wishing that I were involved in some way rather than just being some omnipotent, omnipresence being.

And so, my fellow Escapists, I have to ask. If you enjoy playing god games, then why do you?

The only true god game that comes to mind is Okami, the rest are strategy games, they're more "anthive" games than anything, if we want to be correct.

I'm not really into sims style games. I'd rather be part of the action than just spectating.

I wouldn't call Okami omnipotent and there are other games where you are a god like super being.
Black and white is the perfect god game and i don't there is one like it.Because can make demi gods and rain terror upon our people if they don't worship you.

I don't really enjoy them; but I can see some amusement in twirling the lives of little munchkins who sound like the Swedish Chef around my pinky finger.

That, and I like designing houses...

In what games do you drop a dot of ink at a paper that looks like the sky and a star gets created?

I'd call that omnipotent enough lol.

The best "God Game" was this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populous

Then they stopped making it as far as I know, which is a shame.

Spore was more fun than people gave it credit for. I don't play things like the Sims, but I enjoy RTS games, and everyone and their mum seems to play Minecraft

It's a power trip, I like having dominion over an entire civilization that serve me, knowing that they live and die by my whim.

Plus in some games like The Sims you get this voyuristic feeling.

So it's not to your taste, not everything will be.

Oh, no, I understand that, I just want to know how that it's appealing to others.

It pretty much already been stated but it's about being omnipotent or I simply putted being indirect. Games like that make a nice welcome change and taking a break from being playing a hero or a character in some phyiscal form. With god game while you not exactly in the game itself but you are still involve at directing others to achieve a goal which feel more a greater achivement that you complete it by using your wits then some button mashing or etc.

I just like creating things. It's something I love doing in games. Especially creating cities and stuff like that. Black & White 2 is by far my favourite god game for this.

God games are pretty much the fusion of sandbox and strategy. That's why I love them. The genre seems to have been neglected of late, but "From Dust" looks promising.

Black & White is my favourite god game so far.
