Old fallout games

Yeah, I've played them. Completed the first one only one time though. The 2nd one about 3 or 4 times, I guess. And no, no Ironman. I am kind of an rpg perfectionist... no loot left behind, no quest not done.

I tried playing Fallout 1 and 2 after I heard about how "great" they were after playing Fallout 3. 2 hours later in both of them the CD came right out of the tray and is now serving as the base for my cup.

In a year or two I might revisit it, because I really do think i can enjoy it, not to mention my computers a piece of crap, that struggles to run the most basic of games. THe only drawback of the fallout games, is that they can be very disorienting at first

The biggest problem for me is the excruciatingly boring combat. Loved everything else.

The main draw of the original fallout was the atmosphere, the dialogues and seeing the consequences of your actions.
The combat was shit. Then again, the combat most RPGs isn't good enough.

It's great games, but Ironman, fuck no, It takes a fucking lot of time to complete it, and Enclave soldiers can shot you critical at near end of the game so easy.

They aren't buggy, I replayed them lately, they are still better then Fallout 3.

got fallout 1 and 2 (and the brotherhood of steel tactics game) as a bundle off of steam... I'm still playing the first (though new vegas has distracted the hell out of me!) and to be honest I'm a bit stuck and confused about what to do, which is'nt comforting considering the 100-day time limit. Not sure I approve of a freeroaming open-world rpg where you're railroaded into following the main storyline just to make sure you can complete the game at all, but heyho. Haven't encountered any bugs yet, but maybe the steam release was remastered?

I have mixed opinions about the original fallout's.

One one hand, the narrative is well written, and the locations are fully fleshed out and realised (unlike Fallout 3). On the other hand, the battle system is extremely clunky (and confusing), and the visuals for the two orginals haven't aged well at all.

I hated 2 but loved 1 but didnt get to far since got sucked into Tactics

I bought both original Fallout games and Fallout Tactics on steam and I love them. I did have serious issue with bugs in Fallout 2 but someone did come out with an unofficial patch that fixed them all so anyone who's not been playing because of bugs, might be time to check that out.

I will say, thanks to said patch, I prefer Fallout 2 to Fallout simply because I think it feels more like the post apocalypse since not everyone has a gun.

I absolutelly love both of the older Fallouts. I think they are some of the best RPG's- no... Best games ever to grace mankind. I think the newer ones are a little bit too talked about.

When i said the games were buggy, i meant that things happend uintended like my car wouldn't accept fuel even though i just drove in it a sec. ago, and my car trunk follow me around in the rest of the game.

I have all the Fallout games, but I can't really get into 2 and tactics. I very much enjoyed the first one, but I am not quite finished it yet either...

I have Fallout 1 and 2 but I find I just can't get in to them. I feel lost when I play it, I tried using a guide, so I'll be happily strolling across the world map and BAM! a bunch of radscorpions and all I have his a weak pistol with barely any ammo and a...rusty pipe or something. And this is on the easiest difficulty, which is a shame because I really want to like them.

Yup, this was exactly my experience with the first one: walk, walk, walk, walk, stumble across a group of three radscorpions from which I have precisely fuck-all chance of defending myself, die, give up, play something else.

Shame, 'cos I really wanted to get into it.

I tried to play fallout 2 a few weeks ago and I gave up after trying for about an hour. The gameplay was annoying, the bugs were awful and there was almost no clue on what you had to do. That game is almost unplayable.

I'm going to assume that by bugs you mean the ants in the temple. If you only played for an hour I would argue that you haven't seen any bugs. The early game is not bugged in any meaningful way.


As for the topic: yea, I love the old games. I bought them both at release and greatly enjoy them. I don't understand all the talk about the combat being shit or confusing though. It works very well. It does however, require that the player actually spends some effort. It does not hold your hand.
I suspect that the lack of hand holding is what puts most of the young people off it. Games today does not require any effort. Except for some PC titles like STALKER or Arma.

If we have to talk about shite combat I submit Fallout 3 as an example of terrible combat. And terrible writing, world building and story. And animations. And dialogue.

New Vegas on the other hand is a very good game and feels like a proper Fallout title.
