There was a PC game called Knights and Merchants that i enjoyed rather verily... i have only ever seen one other copy so im assuming its relatively obscure. As for 'old', no RTS experience has ever compared to my first go on Shogun: Total War. Those boys know what they're doing. (although saying that, it was rather cool on Total Annihilation when a Commander strolls into a fight with his 'D-Gun' (i think?) firing away and taking out everything.)

Master of Magic (yes, it's MOO except fantasy with a civilization-esque game map)
That sounds awesome!

They made a remake that came out last summer, I believe.

i remember the old Dark Reign for Win95. a mate had it, and it was one of the best games i played in a long time. i love the opening sequence, though i'll admit i don't remeber the levels themselves that well. i was only 10 what do you expect?

Ahh Blitzkrieg... how I hated you so. "Heres 5 tanks, work fast to destroy the heavily fortified town.

Give me some fricken zerglings and I'll do it.

That game was difficult...
I loved Blitzkrieg. Sure it was a while ago, and I was fairly young, but I have very good memories of it. Ah, nostalgia... I gained a lot of my now vast store of WW2 information from that game. I was going to install Blitzkrieg 2 on my computer a while ago but never got around to it.

Bah, don't bother. Buggy and the levels are awful. Stick with the 2d Biltzes.

Rise of Nations is one of my all time favorites.

Do you have a PS2? Growlanser Generations is very one-of-a-kind. Line-based real time character movement.

(Not Growlanser Heritage of War, that's an action RPG.)

Any of the ones done by CDV and CSC Game World - American Conquest, Cossacks, etc. 2D, giant pitched battles between upwards of 16,000 soldiers, real time and frantic. Like Age of Empires on steroids. Gotta love those Russian devs, man.

Are you talking about Ground Control?

Damn, I forgot about those! Cossacks: European Wars is such a good game.

I never played Cossacks. I bought American Conquest at Target for $10 two weeks ago. I now want to play Cossacks very much.

The business and trade sim genre used to be a lot livelier than it is now. Chase down Tropico, Railroad Tycoon 2, Capitalism 2, Sid Meier's SimGolf, and Patrician 3.

Troipco, heard it was good and sounds interesting. Capitolism 2 is great, although I'm not very good at business strategy.

Anyone ever hear of Ancient Wars: Sparta? I wouldn't recommend it, but it did a few interesting things.

No, but I do know of 'Great War Nations: Sparta'. Bad game, but obscure! So it qualifies for our list.

Also, found a ridiculous-looking series of strategy games;

Played it since I was like 6. Amazing game.

Myth II: Soulblighter is probably my favorite strategy game though.

RTT > RTS, IMO. Anybody have any RTT recommendations?

Personally I loved Gladius on the Xbox, was a turn based strategy game set in the gladiator era.

Was similar to FF Tactics, but something about it just drew me in, I blew hours on that damn thing.
