So I just got KOTOR2 and Age of Pirates 2 for the pc and lo and behold they dont work.KOTOR says my graphics driver is out of date which seems like its insulting me (I can max out Fallout NV on this shit!) and AOP refuses to load some thing. I thought that new computors were supposed to be better. I played KOTOR 1 on steam just fine, why cant I play KOTOR 2? And why does AOP have such a bad case of the Gremlins?

Try to run them in compatibility mode.
Or maybe the particular game requires administrator rights ... heck, recently civilization 5 suffered from that particular issue before they patched it out.

But PC gamers LOVE old games.

So, they tend to work around it via confusing methods I can't be bothered doing. Even for System Shock 2.

90% of the time those "confusing" methods amount to right clicking the desktop shortcut, selecting Properties, then Compatibility and then turning on the compatibility mode for W95/98/whatever...

I think it's mostly a problem of the fact that most out-of-the-box PC's don't have graphics cards worth crap anymore. Intel doesn't really do games, ya know?

Tell that to my copy of Grandia 2.

Well, the other 10% is usually Googling "Name of the game" + "Name of your OS" and following the instructions that seem least likely to blow something up... :p

There is a KotOR 2 Vista fix [http://knightsoftheoldrepublic.filefront.com/file/TSL_Windows_Vista_Fix;85439]. Worked well for me on Windows 7.

If the configuration tool complains about your drivers, just ignore the complaint. It's because your card is too new for the game to recognize it.

Yeah. System Shock 2 is a pain in the arse to run, largely because the filetype of the movies has long been abandoned. Hence, you have to muck around with codecs.

Funnily enough, compatibility mode isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

In fact, i've never found that it makes a difference. There are some games that I still can't get to work with Windows 7, even after hours of trawling help websites and playing around with configurations.

Depends on just how old they are ...
I've managed to get some running in XP mode when compatibility mode isn't sufficient ... but then that is a feature only available on professional, enterprise, or ultimate versions of win7.

Try getting Tie Fighter to work on Vista or 7. I dare you.

Also, KOTOR 2 is fiddly but manageable, while Dark Forces and Jedi Knight are next to impossible.

Well, I wouldn't know about W7, but with XP most of the time problems went bye-bye as soon as I turned on compatibility mode for W95, even for some DOS games.

However, it does suck that the gaming industry in general isn't more dedicated to backwards compatibility. However, once you take greed into account, it kinda makes sense. They don't want you playing old games when you could/should be buying their new ones...

Having just upgraded I've got a nice single core rig with a 2004 era video card. I might just keep it around to dual boot Win XP to avoid just these issues.

I don't have a working copy (had it on floppy disks), but I'm quite sure it will run under DOSBox.

My favourite moment was when I tried to load a game and my computer told me I had insufficient RAM because apparently my 4GB RAM wasn't enough to meet the 512MB minimum requirement.

Dark Forces 2 and Jedi academy work fine on my computer running Vista.
