I was gonna say Starcraft... there is a FUN game not many people have heard of called, Impossible Creatures.... it was one of the earlier titles form Relic I think..... Check it out.

This is the part where I get to root through my collection and give you my favorites for a budding PC gamer who wants to get in on Golden Age strategy games (and I'll restrict this to games at least five years old
2004: Rome: Total War, still my all-time favorite game. Crusader Kings is excellent if you spend the ten bucks for the Deus Vult expansion---it's a nice intro to Paradox games and the first leg of the Paradox 900.
2003: Rise of Nations, which takes the Age of Empires formula and polishes it to a perfect shine. SimCity 4 is the best of the modern city-builders (and is available cheap these days). Victoria was excellent, but it's not for everyone.
2002: Morrowind, Medieval: Total War, and a little underrated gem called Sid Meier's SimGolf.
2001: Civ 3 (the FAQ I wrote for this game comes up as the first result if you google my name. Spiffy!), Tropico, Europa Universalis 2, and the sublime Capitalism II. This was also the year Warcraft 3 came out (not my cup of tea, but a lot of folks like it.)
1999: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Held my "best game ever" crown for five solid years. Still ranks #2 on my list. I'd say "SimCity 3000" here but that game yacks under XP, never mind Vista/7.
1998: Railroad Tycoon II (I still play this a decade later.) Starcraft came out in '98---again, not my personal cup of tea, but don't take my word for it.
1996: Warcraft II. Poke around on SourceForge and you can play it using the Stratagus engine, which is a nice improvement for the game.
1995: Civilization II (one of the best in the series), Caesar "Plebs are needed!" II (best in its series.)
1993: SimFarm. You can find a Windows version that actually runs in XP (not sure if "XP Mode" in Win7 supports it.) Makes Harvest Moon look like a child's toy.
1989: SimCity Classic, though to be quite honest, the SNES version was for my money the best version of the original game.

The best thing about old games is that they will run on pretty much any PC. I was going to mention Thief and Total Annihilation (since we are looking for RTSs here). TA ruined RTSs for me because it was that good. I still to this day never got into Startcraft because of it.
Also +1 for Morrowind, though you need a significantly better PC to run it than Thief or TA. That's not saying much given the bare minimum reqs those two games have. I'm also in the camp that says that Morrowind was better than Oblivion. That's not to say that Oblivion didn't fix a ton of gripes I had about Morrowind, but I still have more fun with Morrowind in the end.

Age of mythology was just customized enough to make it interesting, where AoE3 took those same contcepts and made it so you barely needed resources any more. I kind of missed having the gather points to destroy, or the long trains of peons(sorry, villagers) to masacre.
or the turtling. My first game Of AoE2 I won using a minefield of towers to horde the resources on my side of the island, while my galleons destroyed vilager filled transports and fishing boats.
If your looking for a good PC game, I highly recomend it.

I remember that! Man I hated those plebs. They were never where they were needed and always to few on water.
If you're willing to try it, the original Homeworld is a 3D RTS Space Opera. One of my all-time favorites. Some people have issues with the 3D aspect or it, but if my father can master the controls, you can too. The old Mechwarrior (Mecha war games) games... Freespace 1+2 (Space flight sim). Oh, and a hidden gem, Tachyon: The Fringe is a Space flight sim staring none other than Bruce Campbell. There are SO many games to point you towards... Everything listed by the others before me too... The Thief games, which are stealthy type games.

Not RTS, but no foray into PC gaming would be complete without installing Baldur's Gate and BG2. Seriously, these are the games that launched BioWare into the forefront of the RPG genre. The story is amazing, the characters memorable, and there's a reason the game's modding community is active today, over 10 years after the initial release of the games.
