Old RTS game

Dear fellow gamers

I am in need of some assistance, please.
I'm looking for an old RTS game for PC. I really don't know alot about the game, but here goes:

The game I am looking for is an old RTS game. I've estimated that the game was released around 1995-1998. It's graphics are similiar to StarCraft and KKnD and such games of that era. No 3D, zooming or panning with the camera.
Ok, the game itself was nothing major; It featured two or three(?) races that you could choose from and they all had the same structure system as StarCraft/Red Alert; buy this factory, build this unit and so on. But, the thing that I really liked with this game, was that you could customize your units. You could customize your units from arms till feet. I don't remember if the torso or the head was changeable. The process was very like the process in the game "Metal Fatigue": you put parts on a "body" and then you accept it into the world. Pretty cool! The game was based in space on the races homeplanets I believe.

I'm sorry for the lack of information, but I hope some of you could give me some help.
Thanks

Dune, perhaps? That's what I'm thinking, but there's probably a few people who will know more about what you're talking about.

The only thing that seems familiar is Dawn of War, but that's not 1995-1998
It's also 3D, it has panning and zooming features, and arming a plasma gun instead of a flamethrower isn't customisation...

Thanks for the feedback.
I have checked all your submissions: It is not Dune, not Dawn of War and not a game of the Command and Conquer-"franchise". This game is an old RTS and I don't believe it was very popular at the time. It was sort of an average game, I guess. Nothing great, not rubbish. Of course I might be wrong, It's well over 15 years since I've last played it...
Thanks for your help, and I hope people keep coming with suggestions.

I apologize He_Is_Legend (welcome, by the way), but have you played World in Conflict?

I would recommend that if you're looking for something more new.

No idea, I only played C&C games and Total Annihilation (which by the way was AWESOME and needs a sequel now!). I'm sure someone on here will have your answer.

I sort of remember Earth 2150 having customizable units... it fits your criteria, though I don't remember how old the game is. It's a series, so maybe it's one of the games before/after it, but that was the only one I tried a loooong time ago.

Warzone 2100

Which has had it's source code released and numerous updates made to it since you will last have played it.

EDIT: Ninja'd, but I mentioned the fact that it's open source so woo

... I'm not entirely versed in RTS, or old PC games at all, really(unless we're talking Wolfenstein), but yo ujust made me search, "RTS" and go to RTSC and find the Dark Colony website.

Thank you. I'm downloading this game right now and it looks kickass.

Perhaps you can browse this site I'm on as well and find it for yourself.

It'll be a lot of digging though.

Thanks, Faceless One.
It is a pretty old game, and this thread makes me feel old aswell. I've been searching "Home of the underdogs", but didn't find it, but then again, I don't know the name of it, but I will as soon as I see any of you posting it here. It is so annoying... I don't remember any more than this. I know the info isn't quiet enough, but it is all I know and hopefully one here knows what I mean.

Gameplay mechanics-similarities : Metal Fatigue (customizing parts for units)
Interface similarities : Red Alert/Metal Fatigue
Graphics Similarities : StarCraft/Dark Colony
I don't remember if the camera was "askew" of straight down, if you understand what I mean? (StarCraft vs. Warlords 2)

Thanks, everybody! Keep posting!

Yes, that one was great.

Also, the old C&C games that were released freeware can be downloaded here.

EDIT:
After rereading the OP it seems my post is kinda useless...

Try Age of Empires 1, maybe? I don't really know any old RTS games besides AoE, Starcarft, Warcraft and Dune so I'm not really that helpful...

Yeah, I've played "Impossible Creatures", and that game is pretty awesome. The game I am searching for is based in space(?) or some other planet. It is not "Age of Empires" though it is a great game also.

If you have any knowledge with old games, or is as old as me, or older, you might know what I am looking for if you see the "clues" I have given.

I might try these other games if I don't find the game I am searching for.
I appreciate all tips and game mentions, but so far, no one has found it.

Thanks!
Keep posting.
