Alright, so far we've got...

1.) Nostaliga.

Well, great.

I mean, don't get me wrong. A lot of you have gave some pretty good insights, but I am really wondering what makes them superior in some people's minds. A lot of you are coming up with "They're still fun." Well, that's like saying that they're equal. I'm asking what puts these old games over their counterparts of the current generation. The nostalgia thing is valid, but I can't imagine that holding many people over.

I mean, what about people like the Angry Videogame Nerd, who mostly only play those old games back from gaming was an infant?

I love me some Ocarina of Time, but in my mind that's just not old enough, despite being on the N64.

You could argue that games back then were more childish, more happy. They've got brighter colors and such. We still have those kinds of games coming out. Super Smash Bros. is a good example. I have to say, though, I haven't played very many "bright, coloroful, happy, and childish" games lately.

So I guess what I'm asking is for someone to give modern gaming a good verbal thrasing about how it's cocking up the gaming industry and games of old are vastly better because of ____ reason.

There, a site with all NES games that you need.
I would take that link down. Mods don't like advertising of ROM sites.

@topic

Because they are, in fact, often better than most modern games. You can't tell me that Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! isn't better than, say, Gears of War 2. Or that you have more fun playing Halo than Metal Slug IV.

Back then, it wasn't against the rules to be ridiculously over the top. And that's fun. Ever played Rampage? Yeah.

Modern games are reserved compared to the hilariously over-the-top nature of older games. Even games that are now considered "edgy" and "over-the-top" are pussyfoots compared to older NES games. For example; Rampage.

The whole point of the game is to go around and destroy cities and eat people. No rhyme or reason as to why. You just felt like going out one day and blowing the fuck out of some buildings.

You also have to take into the difficulty factor. I'm not a horrible gamer by any means, but about 90% of the games that are just plain too hard for me to beat are on the NES (I.E. Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Contra, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!). Even these games that everyone makes out to be so hard (Like... say... Ninja Gaiden (the new one) and *insert other game that was supposed to be hard*) are easy in comparison.

At least you can BEAT Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox.

You have an interesting point there.

(Although, I couldn't beat Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox because my FUCKING disc was jacked up. Last time I buy a game at a garage sale.)

Anyway, yea, I suppose they were a lot harder back then. I agree. Then again, I like my games easy. Call me a pussy, but I just don't want to frustrate myself. I'd rather feel as if I'm all-powerful and my enemies are nothing to me. NOTHING! HAHAHAH...

Uhh...

Yeah. Where was I? Oh right. As for the over-the-topness... I suppose that's true. We're all dedicated to realism these days... I am not sure what to say about it. I see that side of it, but I also see that over-the-top-ness-ness-ness is still very much present in several games, just in different ways. MGS4, for example, has the complete absurd, yet beautiful story that sucks you in like brand new vacuum.

I can't get animated enough about modern gaming to give it a good thrashing. It's just, huh, that game again? Really? I don't play games because they are retro. I play them because I'm not that interested in almost all of the hyped up new games and when I try to get interested I'm often bored and disappointed with the results.

Going to back to old games and new indie games keeps my interest in games alive. Some indie developers are low brow enough to make games because they think they are fun or challenging. I like that, I enjoy games that engage with me even if it does make me an uncaring, elitist, unsophisticated dinosaur.

First and foremost, nostalgia, it's such a nice feeling.

Also, back in the day, games were truly original, but nowadays a lot of games are pretty much carbon copies of eachother and it's dissapointing. Also games are too short in general these days, I feel like they are trying to release shorter games faster for more income, and because everyone buys the overly expensive product that isn't that good, there is no real reason for them not to!

Storyline is sorely lacking in most games these days as well, I feel like so many games are all about how good they can get the graphics, which amazes me. I don't think I have EVER refused to play a game because it didn't look good enough.
