I was pretty much brought up on music from the 50s, 60s and 70s and so I cant possibly list all the songs I like from those decades, so heres something older, and a bit different

The recording is not old, but the song itself dates from the American Civil war.

I dont neccessarily agree with the message of the song, I just like the way it sounds. I first heard it on The Assassination of Jesse James. Took me ages to find out what it was.
