No... Just just no. It looks so god damn bad, how could anyone think this looks good compared to the originals? Spike Lee made some decent movies (although they were a little bit preachy) but you can't just go from muh racism muh civil rights to a very depraved very dark revenge story which was part of a trilogy.

America needs to stop doing this.

it looks like they haven't changed much other than the language and the actors. the shots seemed pretty damn similar. if so, it'll just be not as good as the korean version, but not as terrible as i feared when it was announced

So, I'm wondering....Why Spike Lee? I mean, this is more of a Tarantino kind of project isn't it? Maybe that's just my impression, but Seriously, Spike Lee?

The part that stops it from being as bad as it sounds? The part where barely anyone ever references the american version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. From what I've seen at least, the American version was swept under the rug as soon as it stopped getting shown at cinemas.
The American version made back more than twice its budget in box office sales alone, garnered a higher metacritic score than the 2009 film, and was pretty positively received all around. The worst thing most reviewers said about it was that it wasn't really necessary, since the 2009 film was equally good, if in a slightly different way.

It's similarly possible that this remake will be a good film, just... unnecessary. I'm not holding my breath though.

The American version was then pushed under a rug and forgotten. Not to mention how it was "Americanized". In the American version, the guy raping her uses his dressing gown as a fucking cape to show how he was in charge. Then when she gets mugged on the subway, she chases down someone and slides down an elevator to get her bag back. Two examples of the ridiculous dramatization in the American version.

Also, you're using metacritic scores as a gauge for overall reception? You may as well be using a taco shell to compare gas mileage on cars.
It was hardly swept under the rug, it just wasn't fast-tracked for a sequel. It made over $120 million at the box office. That pretty conclusively demonstrates that it was positively received by audiences, and its metacritic score indicates that it was positively received by critics. Rooney Mara got nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award, for crying out loud.

Your dislike for the film was decisively not shared by critics or audiences around the world.

And you can look forward to a sequel next year, in all likelihood.

Now i want to see the original SOO BAD right now...

edit::: ITS STREAMABLE ON NETFLIX! So gonna watch the sh** out this when i get home from work lol
If you go in to the first one thinking you're going to see a cinematic masterpiece, you're gonna have a bad time...

More on topic: I don't understand the sycophantic love this film gets? At the behest of my students, I sat down at watched this film one evening and came back, only to disappoint them by saying that I didn't really enjoy it...at all. It's incredibly predictable, the fights are mediocre at best, and the big twist is exactly what anyone with, quite literally, an 1/8th of a brain can see from a mile away.

Watch it, but don't expect the greatest movie ever told...fyi...Koreans are HORRIBLE at telling stories...especially anything other than drama, which they have in spades.

By no means am i expecting that. I just like a good revenge flick.

I just have an appreciation for single take fight scenes. The technical challenges of getting a bunch of actors to fake fight each other for one long take impresses me more then your typical highly choreographed and flashy fights.

Plus i do not go into a movie having high expectations. Something i use to do and it just ruined my viewing experiences. Now i sit back and enjoy the movie as it comes to me. Been happier ever since.

Asian movies have tiny budgets and likes telling the same stories over and over again. You'll always see it coming.

The red band trailer convinced me to finally finish the film last night (I had seen the first hour and loved it). It's genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen thanks to the "big reveals." The film had a fantastic premise, acting and action scenes and I loved every minute of it... Right up until the first reveal. You know the one. After that, it became a boring, predictable film and all the magic was lost. It proved to be full of Eastern movie clichés and seemed like a terrible plot in general. The corridor fight scene, as amazing as it is, is the best in the film. Everything following that one is dull.

In my opinion it's a shame that this is the film that Park is most known for; I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK is one of the best films I've ever seen and shows he can tell a story better than most. But Oldboy is pointless crap.

But this remake at least looks cool. I expect the fight scenes to be a little better and Brolin's pretty great.

Sorry, you lost me at Josh Brolin's sex appeal. The guy looks like Mickey Rourke's younger brother. I think he suits the part really, really well on account of this.

OT: I'm giving this film a shot, if it is faithful to the original then it should at least be entertaining enough, plus I want to see what they shoehorn in as an ending since I'm assuming they won't risk trying to sell the original one to an American audience.
