Older games that aged well. (strictly talking about graphics)

Graphically, Chrono Trigger (though it also has fantastic music and gameplay) holds up in my opinion. Better than other JRPGs that were being released at that time anyway (though they also play and sound great).

This topic might be a little superficial as I'm mainly talking about graphics. Usually something an RPG fan puts less emphasis on. But, I have noticed some games visually have stood the test of time, while some look pixelated and grainy and hard to look at.

I noticed for example, to this day I really love the style of the Fire Emblem titles on GBA. A lot of these 16 bit games still look great. I do enjoy Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, yet I think the 3D polygonal characters look horrible compared to those in Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones.

I feel Saturn and PS1 titles have not aged well at all. Prerendered backgrounds I think look great, but the characters are horribly pixelated.

Also, take a peak at Wild Arms 1. The game looks pretty good visually despite looking like a SNES game. But, they really really dropped the ball when it came to the 3D battles. I could tolerate a lot of PS1 games despite a bit of pixelation and blocky characters, but the original Wild Arms battle graphics are painful to witness.

What games do you believe stood the test of time visually, and those that didn't?
PC games cheat in a way, because they get free graphics upgrades as the newer cards come out; but still, devs have to plan ahead in order for this to have an effect.

Homeworld 2 is a wonderful example of graphics aging perfectly. The game is around 8 years old and still looks like it was released yesterday. . .

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night still looks great to me, ironic how people all laughed at it still being 2D when it first came out.
Yeah, the truth is that 2D games age so much better.
OT:
Donkey Kong Coutry (the entire series)
Super Mario World
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie
I could go on for a long time.

Castlevania: SOTN was pretty good looking, in my oppinion. Of course, I was having way too much fun to notice, and that's how it should be.
While someone can easily disagree with me, I really liked the look of all the old sprite FPS games. Sure, some objects faced you no matter what direction you looked at them, and everything was all pixelated and what not, but they had what most modern FPS games lack: style. Since they couldn't render enemies in 3D, they had to draw the enemies or make a model and then make them into sprites. Due to this, a lot of the games had very distinct styles. Doom was bright, sharp and colorful. Duke 3D was dark, beaten up, and trashy. Blood was macabre, grotesque, and almost Lovecraftian.
I'm not saying all 3D FPS games have no style, I'm just saying that since things have gone into 3D, a lot of games look almost identical.

Starfox Adventures on Gamecube. It still looks so pretty, all the vibrant colors and landscapes still fill me with glee just looking at them.

Plus, it's got dinosaurs. Who's gonna argue against a pretty game with dinosaurs in it?

Symphony of the Night.
Baldurs Gate, Fallout, all those types of games.
Diablo 2
Civilization 3
Warcraft 3
Windwaker
I can keep this up all day, I reckon these games look wonderful, stylized, not high tech.

Quake III Arena's graphics are pretty ageless compared to similar-era FPS games. It's a pity nobody plays it anymore.
Yep, and the engine is still being used today with the COD games including Modern Warfare 3, a whole 12 years later. Ok, a hugely expanded and quite modified engine but the same engine none the less.

It's a very good engine, the COD games are the only FPS games that can do a consistent 60-fps frame-rate, which is something that is hard to overestimate.

You know what also genuinely looks fantastic today?

Wind Waker from 2003:

You have to admit, if a game came out with that quality today it wouldn't stand out at all, it would be praised for it's graphics even.

Drawn and cell-shaded stuff tend to be pretty timeless. Other than those I'd say games that have a good use of colour and keep things happening on-screen. The sudden transformations and flashy hits on the first Bloody Roar make it very playable for me today.

A game that I think beats most (if not all) its genre counterparts in the modern day is Evil Zone. The game has too much style to go out of date.

Oblivion aged pretty well. The other day I played it in a gaming rig, and we maxed the graphics, textures, everything and it looked amazing.

Heroes of Might and Magic III/IV for me. Both games had absolutely gorgeous graphics, especially so with the third installment. I really miss the old sprite graphics.
HoMMIII's storybook graphics are still so cool to look at.

Um, Chrono Cross actually. The spell effects still look really cool to me.

I notice a big consensus on 2D graphics and cel-shading looking the best. I agree. I believe some games still look great today, not due to technical specs, but art style. Take for example the new Tactics Ogre remake on PSP. They cleaned up the textures a little, but I think the most marked improvement is aesthetic. The character portraits during dialogue look extremely good.
