I'll never forget my first encounter with Final Fantasy at my cousin's house, and have generally followed that series' highs and lows. Today I was playing through the first one and got so annoyed by the random encounter rate in a particular dungeon I gave up, flushing away thirty minutes of grind and not caring one whit. While everyone these days blathers on about how JRPGs need to change more to become accessible to American audiences, it's funny to me when I saw the Let's Play video of SaGa 3 for Game Boy of all things, and I still felt the guy playing was having fun from the way he talked.
While many of the old-timers of the first console RPGs might be willing to forgive an obnoxious random encounter rate- or any random encounter rate at all- and armies of recolors (or in the prior case of SaGa, just different names and better stats and attacks), in today's world what is your limit on tolerance for such repetitive mechanics? Can you still enjoy them?
