I'm wholeheartedly expecting Duke Nukem to be under that helmet.
It doesn't even make a bit of sense, but I can't really imagine it any other way either.
As for Freeman, I think he's actually mute, and doesn't know any means to communicate without language. I understand the various reasons and advantages to having a silent protagonist, however the way he actively gets volunteered constantly for extremely dangerous stuff without a care in the world as if it was totally normal suggests either he has no way of protesting, or that everyone but him actually knows he's actively being assisted in the shadows by some weird alien loosely attempting to appear human.
