Ok so I'm sorry to start another Oscar thread, but I had to rant a little bit. Has anyone noticed how many times the Curious Case of Benjamin Button has won?? It just beat out Dark Knight and Ironman for best special effects! Seriously what special effects?? Thank you for listening to my rant and feel free to comment.

Well, they managed to turn Brad Pitt, a youth filled actor whom is known by many men and women as a Handsome man, into a Small senior who is 12. This is something that is completly new to the industry of Hollywood. And much like good reviews in the Game industry, the Film industry rewards innovation.

Oh you know that the opinions are of the Oscars are the opinions of elitists bitches who choose bad movies and just throw their arms up in the air when someone tries to point out an actual good movie and say "you just don't understand art".

Just so it's out there, the man who plays Old Ben is *ahem* not Brad Pitt. Look it up.

Heres the arguement though, though you do point out a very common point, and it holds a lot of merit. But just like a review in the game industry can vary oppinon, the movie industry is no diffrent. Though the opinnon of people in the film industry awarding movies holds more merit in my oppinon, due to the critics knoweldge of the work that every angle of the production crew does. I have no idea what a Director does, other then order people about, but im almost positive that critics do. So they might know a bit more on the subject, but I have disagreed a few times with them, I found "Juno" to be the best movie of last year, made me question my previous belifs, along with making me laugh. I wish that the Oscars would agree with me in that fact. Ellen Page did an amazing job in that movie.

I agree in that everyone can have their own opinion, and I respect that people can like different things than I do. But I also believe that something should not be frowned upon and called "mediocre film making" just because its mainstream. And I see most of the time, film critics will choose an obscure movie and worship it to make themselves seem like a film connoisseur but you can't say anything because you haven't watched it.

So... kinda like us here on the escapist *ducks*

I'm just glad that The Dark Knight didn't win something, though that scene with the truck where they actually blew it up like that was LEGENDARY.

Yeah, last year I Remeber reading the Oscar Nominations and thinking "Are these movies or Statments?" (No Country for Old Men, There will be Blood) I watched both of these films before the Oscars, And I could safely say, the movies were pretty wild, but sucked for mass appeal. There is also a new arguement, What makes a movie good? Popularity or Uniquness? I think both, But many movies only have one or the other. Iron Man, had enough popularity to start a revoultion, but enough innovation to barely start a car. Don't get me wrong I loved Iron Man, I went out and started purchasing Iron Man comics so then I could get more of the Titanium plated Hero. But there wasn't much of the "new", which as I have discussed before is Hollywoods infatuation.

B)I personally don't care if a move is unique (although I can see why people do)because, in the end I want to love a movie not find exquisite in a way that I can hang it up in an art auction. It bothers me when the entertaining values of a movie are sacrificed just to be "new" and they mostly do that to get an Oscar too. No Country Country for Old Men was ridiculous, I think there was about 5 lines of dialogue in the whole movie. It was just watching people run around flinging bullets at each other. It was art in the same way Halo 3 was art.

I don't like how the academy rewards movies that come out in Oscar time, like around Sept.-December.

I call it the Oscar effect.

I take it the acedemy is such a pack of stupid motherfuckers -Taken from Big Bills Auto Hell
that they forget any movie made half a year ago. Leaving only
Semi-good, to bad movies that are artistic. So basiclly
they have short term memory and don't reward anything that cartoons
or based on a cartoon seriously. Except for LOTR- if you consider
the cartoon movie, derving from the real movie.

But truly artism is what you make of it, I don't see how the
academy can call the cimneacagraphy of Benjamin Button artisic.
Its all in the eye of(In this case)...self-righteous beholder.
Truly truly, anyone could call The Hills have Eyes 2 artisic
considering if they truly wanted to, like the arbitual academy.

Made the same joke myself, and that is a problem, there is a clear line between "Oscar Movies" and "Public Movies" its all in the Box Office, using numbers off the top of my head "The Curious Case of Benjamin Butler" made like 75 Million, while as of Recently "Friday the 13th" made 40 million in its First Week. But I digress, Point is Hollywood thinks the same way as the Gaming Industry, the Truly unique get the awards but the mass produced get the boot. Though oppisite of the Movie Industry we every once and a while get a game that is both, I believe we can all name a few that fall under this category.

This is not always true. Think back to movies like Titanic which made ridiculous amounts of money at the box office and still won the most Oscars of any movie. Also Lord of the Rings was very popular and won a ton of Oscars. There are many popular films that do well at the Oscars. However the academy does not always recognize the good movies just because they are popular.

Edit: Titanic had the most nominations of any movie. It was tied with Ben-Hur and Lord of the Rings for most awards.

Though there have been some exceptions he is right the majority of Oscar films are not for the mainstream.

There is a big difference. The way I see it there are movies (Iron Man, Dark Knight, etc) and films which tend to have a lot more about them (Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire)

Thats why when you look at the BFI and AFI's favorite films they are mostly 50 to 60 years old!
