A quick look at my profile would confirm your suspicions.

Faaar too much effort :p Basically newspapers need shock stories and vendettas to sell their obsolete pointless platforms, and so they goad you with crap. They are the shame of Britain in my eyes.

Just a quick question: was that thing where you can check for paedophiles in your local area ever released? I know it was talked about but I can't remember anything more - I'm really hoping the answer is no for the sake of all that is sane.
Dunno about that. I remember a few years ago being able to search across New York to see where the registered sex offenders lived, but I do not know if that translated to the UK.

To everyone though, I know newspaper sensationalism is all-pervasive and self-serving (indeed, at the risk of sounding horribly disingenuous, I was, initially, mildly humoured by how blatant the title was with it. I decided to ramp up the indignation because it's also really quite tiresome now) and the only thing I can really do is ignore it. The level of influence it can have on people is truly alarming though, and I do wonder if we need news all the time if it's always going to be bad? Why not just accept that bad shit happens as a given and try to live as happy a life as you can? Or am I being woefully idealistic?

Heh, as a Brit, you and I both know that when you open the papers here, it's either going to be a story about a celeb or a story which is given a headline which is basically, thus.
[HEADING=1]AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!![/HEADING]

I've stopped reading the main stories of papers due to the amount of fear-mongering they do. I prefer to read more important stories which they bury towards the end of the paper really. Seriously, how in the hell is Wayne fricking Rooney having a holiday a bigger story then, say, a story about a soldier who did something in Iraq or somewhere.

Anyway, small off-topic ranting aside, it is just fear-mongering and a massive over-reaction, yes. And sadly, as has been said, fear-mongering produces reactions that get people to pay attention to that fear so the media will always try to spread fear.

Newspapers are a little more dramatic now thanks to the internet, they need headlines that will still pull people in. Also, a source like 'the News Shopper' should never be taken seriously, ever.

Hmmm, it was a pretty recently discussed I think - the end of last year at the earliest.

nursery's are actually somewhat safer than homes. Pedophilia as the guy who made this thread said occurs more often by family members and at the home. Plus if any thing happened that looked funny at a nursery the staff would act on it.

It's ridiculous, but let's see what Charlie Brooker has to say on the subject:

This man is my new hero.

Oh my god they're right! Nurseries will attract Paedos! And you know what else will? Schools! They're filled with young children! We have to get ride of schools!

OT: Ah, Yellow Journalism. Making people more interested in the news by making it seem incredibly important since... well I guess since the beginning of human news.

I can see it now. Caveman A was just attacked by a sabre-tooth tiger and goes back to Caveman B, C, and D. He tries to get them to listen, but they have little interest in the story of his attack. So he tells them he was attacked by a huge s-t tiger that was bigger than a tree. B, C, and D are all suddenly enraptured.
