If you can get your hands on it for cheap, I'd suggest Out of This World (Another World in Europe). It practically defined "Nintendo Hard", but the atmosphere is top-notch. The unofficial SegaCD sequel, Heart of the Alien, sort of missed the mark in some places but had some absolutely beautiful scenes and music.

Also, Kairo is sort of weird and aggravating at times and doesn't exactly set benchmarks for graphics, but it can go from mysterious to oppressive to grand easily.

EDIT: Oh hey, Out of This World is on sale for $5 on Steam for the next two days.

Fallout 3 GOTY for $5. If you want a world you can get lost in there is nothing better in gaming in my opinion. And come on... its 5 bucks, 2.50 if you don't want DLC.

Elder Scrolls? Only ONE person has mentioned the ES series? Really? And even then, only as an afterthought.

For SHAME. Anyway, I would recommend Morrowind or Skyrim, OP.

For some quick and free Flash games, I recommend Level Up! [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/503833] I don't know why, but the last one is this weird masterpiece that should not be, but is.

i highly recommend if you haven't played it already The Last of Us and The Walking Dead: Season 1. i also recommend Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon, it is a very good and very atmospheric game, and it has dual audio if that floats your boat. though the english dubbing is very well done. Fragile Dreams is about a boy who is left alone after his guardian has died, soon after his guardians death he decides to go on a journey. it's set post apocalypse. one of the best parts of the game is that you can find various stuff and learn about the people who owned it, i have actually gotten attached to a few of the people mentioned in these logs, and have cried for them, so take that as you will.

Fragile Dreams for the Wii is full of atmosphere, it oozes it.

Odin Sphere for the PS2 is another great atmospheric game.

For the PC, there's a recent game called Nihilumbra. There's also the Myst series of games which have always oozed atmosphere.

For the DS, the Zero Escape series also has a lot of atmosphere.

And on the PSP is a game called Fate/Extra, it has a lot of atmosphere to it, the dungeon areas are very beautiful and in spite of the school's small area, it still has a unique feel to it.

And finally, on the Vita is Gravity Rush. The world of this game is just beautiful.

There are also two games that I haven't played but have seen LP's of. Cryostasis, and Knock-Knock. Two PC games.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the World (Simulates what it's like to go insane, literally)
Shame on me for forgetting about such a brilliant game, thank you for reminding me.

Hehe everyone who hasn't tried it yet should, it's a fantastic game that captures Lovecraft's written atmosphere perfectly, plus it's a shame to miss out on the feeling of being chased by fish people through delapidated bulidings while limping and taking pills for the pain, all these while hearing the main protagonist's desperate monologue... I think I was actually sweating during these things...

Brilliant game, brilliant writing, brilliant puzzles!

Cheers!

P.S.

It's Dark Corners of the Earth...

Miasmata is a very atmospheric game. You play a scientist trapped on an island who is infected with an unknown disease that is slowly killing you, you must hunt around the island and try to find a cure. Unfortunately you are not alone on the island and are being stalked by a mysterious creature than cannot be killed, you must avoid it by stealth and cunning, keeping out of its way as you explore the island and try and save yourself before the disease kills you. Its pretty awesome.

Edit: It's also part of the Steam Halloween Sale until for the next day or so, so you can pick it up for $3

I looked all over and no one mentioned "Haunting Grounds" shame. If you want a good horror survival like a mix between clock tower and rule or rose check it out.
