Why bother with that deception? Too many moving pieces to fake, and the public would question why the hero so conveniently got there just too late to stop the blast. Just pick someone else to do it (be the hero, that is), fake your karmic death at his hands (death by exposure to outer space, for example, doesn't leave a body on the ship, appeals to the sensibilities of the public, and any meaty, charred mass will do for the impact that will "confirm" your death), and sit back and make the puppet dance (as people will cheer the hero for defeating you, which you can then parley into getting your mouthpiece a place of power).

Nope, but it feels like it. I've seen a parody with it of every game, show, video, whatever I like. I've been ignoring it for a while, but the MLP fans are obnoxiously loud about their liking of the show (For which I can't understand).

I'd spend a couple of days making some huge overtly complicated diabolical plan with the laser at its center then leak the information in hopes that it would set off a reaction causing some sort of disillusioned heros to try and stop me just to activate the laser RIGHT before they caught up to me destroying the Earths core because that's what Sephiroth would do

As I mentioned before, just groom the hero/heroes yourself, fake your villainous persona's karmic death at their hands (remotely controlled manikin stuffed with protein paste out the airlock should do nicely once it falls to earth) then sit back, relax, and maneuver your heroes into a position of power.
