One Minute Reviews: Cryostasis

Cryostasis, an FPS horror/thriller from developer 1C games, puts the player in the shoes of Alexander Nesterov, a Russian scientist investigating the dead shell of a Nuclear Icebreaker, the North Wind. The ship, which went mysteriously quiet and has remained frozen in place since, is as much a character in this game as Alexander, creaking, groaning, and falling apart as Alexander delves deeper and deeper into the mystery of its sudden demise. Alexander, however, is not alone. The ships inhabitants still wander it as zombielike, unrelenting monsters. It is in this environment that Alexander must survive, fighting off the crew members while trying to unravel the secrets that ship hides in its icy grave.

As a thriller, Cryostasis excels in building suspense and tension as Alexander moves through the halls of the ship. Metal groans, wind howls through cracks, and the occasional footstep or two truly helps to make the player feel like he is not alone. Jump scares and a great soundtrack further immerse the player, resulting in genuine moments of fear when something truly does happen aboard the ship. The icy climate of the Arctic occasionally poses your biggest threat as the cold air and frost sap your strength, and your health. Don't fret however, you can regain all of your health by crouching next to a heat source: a mechanic that may feel awkward at first but which soon becomes second nature.

Cryostasis is a good all around game. It has a great premise and action that truly immerses the user, including an innovative system of time travel in which you jump into the body of dead crewmembers and influence their actions, resulting in the removal of obstacles from your path of discovery. The shooting, however, does feel a bit unpolished at times, and the game is plagued by technical issues including a tendency to crash during particularly exciting moments of the game. If you can get around these faults, however, you can find yourself playing a game that is quite enjoyable and absolutely terrifying at points.

Price: $12.99 USD (Steam)

Rating 3.5/5 (Good)

it's actually a pretty interesting review you got there, it's nice to see people "noticing" the sleeper hits like Cryostasis

I adored this game, and I funny enough I had no technical issues at all while playing it; guess I was lucky. Also, the gunplay may feel 'unpolished' but something leads me to believe that's how the gunplay should be. You're not some space marine or whatever, you are an average joe, and the clunkyness of the guns show that. If they made the guns "useful" it would really take away some tension from the game, and the way these old ass guns work adds tension to those fights.

But that's just how I see it. Game was still great all around.

I really liked it too. I was just disappointed at some of the technical issues.
