One on one games?

Does anyone know what some good one on one games are?

Most preferably online ones on the PC that are mainly free and don't require illegal activity to download.

I've already considered certain things like arcade games for high score, fighting games, racing games, certain shooters, all that jazz.

Any help with this would most certainly be appreciated.

There used to be a little 2d side scrolling beat em up on the pc that I used to constantly play with my friends. I can't for the life of me remember the name, but it had all different anime inspired personas as well as powerups and bosses, and the final level was in this massive castle where the boss looked like an evil version of Braveheart. It was quite well done, but required all the players to use the same keyboard.
If someone remembers the name, I'd suggest that game, it ws fuuuuun.
It was free, was on pc, craploads of people played it, it wasn't illegally downloaded. Wish i could rememeber...

Yes, it was multiplayer and had an awesome Vs mode. you could go one on one or you could have like 8 people in a free for all battle. it was bloody insane.
