I liked Naruto when I first got in to it a few years ago, but the luster has faded for two reasons.

ONE: As has been repeated by many people before me, EVERYONE in the series (with little exception) is a ninja. Sure it's a series about ninjas, but it's hard to get contrast, both with characters and battles when both sides are playing the sneaky, clever, instant death warrior cards. Every time a new villain or minor character is introduced it's another ninja. (Yes, there are exceptions but so few that the point is moot.)

TWO: The action moves very, VERY slowly. Most episodes spent the first five to ten minutes re-hashing what little plot had crawled out of the last episode and there was so much filler when the writers were still deciding on what direction to take the story. You know the pacing resembles the average land speed of a snail when there is an arc called "The Filler Arc".

Something that I have always respected Naruto for is its quality of animation. The fight scenes always look spectacular and I will always cherish the days I spent ogling at the Gaara vs. Rock Lee fight.

Naruto is a good anime, but could have been made exemplary by cutting out the extemporaneous fat that repetition, filler, and excessive back story created, and replacing that fat with the lean, fit muscle of quicker pacing, direction, and less ninjas.

Honestly, I get tired of hearing everyone whine and whine about Sasuke. Naruto and Sakura are also pretty lame characters. The funny thing is, I like all the side characters. Naruto was great in the original series. Atatsuki is getting slightly interesting though. It went from a great comedic action/adventure to a much darker/boring action series.

A great thing about One Piece is that it continues to be entertaining and original, without any long dull moments. It always manages to bring a positive feel, even with the occasional emotional moment. The battles build up suspense, and the enemies are ridiculous and creative.

I think the main problems with One Piece and Naruto at least here, In America (anyone?) That One Piece obviously hit hard by 4kids but in reality the fact is here in America everything is a freaking pirate ninjas are cool but rare and the ones that really kick ass one in 500. But here comes Naruto its all Ninjas now what we craved when we where young is now available in bulk for under $10.00. Then in Japane is the opposite everything is Ninjas and Samurais and 18 year old girls with suspiciously young looking bodies. But pirate are rare and the good ones one in 500. Then hory shit! Your life just got better. In normal words the most popular ones here are the opposite of what we have here. Personally One Piece is my favorite and Naruto now thats its away from Sasuke and is more action not just talking about action along with Killerbe its in my top 5. It could be top 3 but those are taken by Berserk, Monster, and One Piece more or less in that order depending on my mood.

Thank you Urgh76, you seem to have made the point! Anyway, I enjoy Avatar too, (except the movie) but I am afraid that is off topic so please take it elsewhere.

Interesting. BTW I would NEVER recommend watching One Piece in the English dub form. Subs before dubs people. Naruto isn't great in English either, but One Piece was butchered in English.
I used to like dubs more than subs. That was until I learned that we were easily 150 episodes behind in almost every anime (more in some). So out of desperation I looked up some subbed episodes of shows like Bleach and One Piece. Let's just say that now I can't imagine any character from any anime speaking Enlgish, because it just sounds weird to me (although Funimation did a good job of bringing dubbed One Piece back from the grave).

I liked Naruto till episode 134, then it was just filler episodes till Shippuden which I didn't enjoy that much at all. Naruto had it's charm and interesting bits and pieces (especially some of the fight scenes) but it was kinda slow and annoying in a lot of episodes. I didn't like how they stopped to explain there special abilities and tactics nearly after every move they made, the amount of flashbacks, the english dub (believe it!), almost the exact same motivation for the enemy's to be assholes, and some other stuff.

One Piece is alright as well, just like most anime, it has it's moments of awesomness and even funny's. And just like most other anime, it's also filled with a lot of crap and boring build-ups. I also got sick of Luffy sometimes when he kept getting clobbered by the big villains and then shouting out "I'm gonna win because I'm going to be king of the pirates"! I mean, once or twice is fine but he says it at least 10 times and I just find it really annoying after awhile.

Full Metal Alchemist and Hunter X Hunter kick all these popular anime in the ass, why don't we talk about them for once?

More than that, the focus on a few simple, repeating themes (like that of loyalty to ones nakama, which basically means something like "Best Friend," but actually implies much more than that (but less than any kind of Romantic interest. It's simmilar to familial love, but different enough to be hard to define))
I think this video explains nakama rather well:
That does explain it pretty decently. Thanks.

I used to love both of them, but I outgrew Naruto right quick, and one piece kinda started to suck in my opinion. I really wanted to love it, but I couldn't.

Ah shit, two manga/anime that I never really got into. Alright let's take a look at this ... you know what, I'm just gonna go with Naruto since I still think One Piece's protagonist is the loud-mouthed pirate version of Mr. Fantastic (I hate Mr. Fantastic).

I read a few volumes of the One Piece manga, and it was pretty decent. I just sort of lost interest, though.

I can't stand Naruto. He's an annoying brat who never stops shouting. I can only imagine how truly terrible the 4Kids dub sounds.

I only read the manga. And One Piece made a miracle for being a really long manga that kept interesting, wasn't afraid of using ugly characters, banished emo, has intelligent battles that are not dependant solely in power levels among other things.

Naruto did not
This is because I swear Kishimoto has people draw Naruto for him. The art quality varies so much and has actually gotten dramatically worse. Naruto should've actually improved WAY faster. He has actual power like 3 arcs into the post time skip! Most people have given up or are just waiting for the end (I'm waiting for Sasuke to die...).

Oda is fucking nuts. I love that man. His art only improves. His creativity knows no bounds. And nowadays, One Piece has gotten way more intense than its humble beginnings. Seriously, check out some art comparisons.

Aka, one is stagnating, the other is flourishing.

Also, the high point of Naruto was the FOIL between Gaara and Naruto. There is supposed to be a FOIL between Sasuke and Naruto, but it is crap. His story telling sucks balls. I haven't cried in Naruto since that epic climax. Series could've ended right then.

One Piece makes me cry every arc ><

EDIT: Also, Oda has estimated OP as having 800-1000 chapters for many years now.

Niether really, I watch 'em when I am starved for tv viewing, But I like Bleach. And durring Naruto, I kept wondering why everyone was wearing bright clothes (why the hell is a NINJA wearing bright orange?) and had major confrontations when you're supposed to find info on your target, get into area, get to target, kill him, get out, no one's the wiser. you don't fight for honor, that's what set ninjas apart from the samurai (ninja's primary target), hell they shouldn't have to fight. just *stab* and done. rant over. I like Bleach

4kids 're-edit' of One Piece. Which was.. Interesting..
4kids is the bane of anime, and a company i'd personally like to give a slap.

I love both OP and Naruto, though naruto is at least 1/3 filler arcs if not more. Actually looking at everything One piece wins. the writer, Eiiroichi Oda, is very close to his fans having inside jokes with them through the fanmails and often adding them into his story as a running joke. Even the way it is written it feels like it was enjoyed being made.
Naruto, whilst still enjoyable doesn't have that level of love.

I can't stand shonen jump.
Well because I feel like they are kiddy versions of manga and besides Naruto annoys me.
