Hello escapist forums, this is my first post and the subject i would like to hear about is man going to Mars.As you may have figured out from the title that you can only go there and never come back to earth because frankly its to exspensive. The thing is that this idea has already been proposed by one Paul Davies and I would like to know your opinion.

So my question to you is: Would you do this

no you would be working for NASA e.i. gathering data, doing experiments and such. The catch is you will grow old knowing you wont return

no.

i would die when the first sandstorm came up. those things are freaking global, and they will break whatever i use to take myself there, so i have no escape.

that is assuming i don't die when my oxygen supply runs out.

it's just a death trap for the moment. maybe if we perfect terraforming, but not a moment sooner.

plz leave Red Faction out of this, It will be atleast another 5-600 years before we can breathe there

Havin read the OP and then this, I have come to this conclusion. Hell, no. I want to come home from space exploration and share my story with the world.

I wasn't even thinking of Red Faction. Red Faction is just one of the millions of stories about rebellions on Mars.

I thought someone might bring this up and prepared for it. So the thing is with sandstorms on mars is that they can be figured out and planned ahead plus there are plenty of caves on mars that can shelter you

I do hope by that statement that you mean pretending in your little fantasy. There will be no air on Mars.. ever. Also, we probably won't be able to get there (only for science exploration, not mass relocation/industry) for at least 100 years.

ahhh but the thing is you will not be alone. You will be broadcasted worldwide on pay-per-view television to try and finance your mission(ok just to clear up, you will be going with four other people)

Hmmm, Apparently modern computers wouldn't be able to survive the radiation that you get in space, or breaking orbit (either way). I likes my computer technology!

It would be tempting, but I like socialising, and there would only be a small group. Eventually everyone would go mad like in those sci-fi films and series from the 70's.

Right, cool. Will I be able to pick the other four?

Not impossible, just incredibly exspensive, the technology to terraform is not that complex. All that is required are a bunch of factories to spew out greenhouse gases and that would couse the ice on mars to melt and be able(to a degree) to support algi that creates oxygen(In theory atleast)

yes, because defending against a global sandstorm is a simple task.

even if you can find a cave or something (i don't actually remember there being any caves on mars, but assuming there were), you have lost the use of any and all survival equipment you have taken there with you. so you're still dead.

Not a fucking chance.

Why would you want to?

EDIT: I'd go for like a city-break there though.

but then does the planet have enough gravitational pull to hold an atmosphere to its surface?
No, no it doesn't. We learnt about that this week in Physics

Where would the algae come from?
And Mars doesn't have a strong enough gravitational force to hold the water to the surface. And just in case you were thinking of saying it, I'll clarify, you cannot induce artificial gravity. Gravity is proportional to mass.
