Recently, I have looked a bit into the world of Dagorhir, I game of competition where you dress up as a fantasy character then kill each other with foam weapons...

Sounds nerdy, but looks hilariously fun.

The shear work put into a simple shield, and the craftshmanship of the weapons is simply alluring to say the least.

Its more like a mixed Martial Arts game than LARPing (u-hu-ugh), involving live combat and limb-loss. The weapons expand from sword to bows to glaives to flails and back again, with all kinds of Units to join or create. It... just looks like a blast!

http://www.dagorhir.com/

Its the nerdiest excercise you'll ever get.

If you guys are in Dagorhir, or want to know a little bit more about it, discuss with me about this... different kind of hobby.

Hm... It sounds pretty awesome, though I personally prefer Shattered Isles and King's Gate (both of which are in Georgia). The site has some awesome foam weapon tutorials, though... I'd love to make a few of these so that my friends and I can beat the crap out of each other.

Let's beat the Larpers!
Enter that into the Escapist T-Shirt Contest! NOW!

This fake battling stuff looks fun, but I can't help but wonder if it's just a really expensive extension of the whole "I shot you! You're dead!" "No I'm not! I jumped out of the way at the last second and it missed!" crap from early childhood.

Watching 30-year-olds do this after plopping down $2500 for the privilege? Um...hey guys, go home and play with your kids. You know, if indeed some poor woman has previously decided to let you, um, slip your fire staff up her level 25 tunic.

Of course, maybe that's the whole issue...

Lol. I would pay 100$ to wear that shirt!
Of course, we could all just jump over to Zazzle or CafePress and make our own anti-LARPer gear for like $20. And that way we could put a picture of Goku or Mr. T on it, too.

Or BOTH.

In Montreal we have a large group of people who meet every Sunday on the mountain to do exactly this. Its people from all over the city. Its very fun to join in as well.

There is also the Society for Creative Anacronysm which is similar but attempts historical accuracy, and uses a bit more hardcore materials for weaponry and armor. Their organization is worldwide, and every few years they have a worldwide battle which has around 5,000 people per side.

Its one of those weird doulbe standards where paintballing and laser tag are acceptable, somehow cool even, yet this stuff is the epitome of geek.

Personally, if you enjoy it, go for it, have fun, and don't let any miserable bastard put a buzzkill on your day!

Also you can carry a wooden sword or mace to your school because thats where they often train. Good way to avoid being mocked :)
That would've saved me so much bullying in grade school. Oh yeah? *thwack*

I do Dag and it is relativly inexpensive I have been a member of a realm for 7 months or better and have spent roughly 25 dollars on the sport and that was to make weapons. That isnt of course including camping trips and the like. But it is great fun and pretty inexpensive. It also is great to meet new people and make friends with people you wouldnt generaly meet I know people from all over Indiana and in Ohio thanks to Dag.
