Me and my girlfriend have been dating for nearly a year now, and it's been amazing. Sure, there's been some ups and downs, but it's been great nonetheless.

For our anniversary, I bought her Super Mario 64 DS (I've got her into gaming) and was planning on taking her to a restaurant of her choice, but was afraid of the cost of the meal so suggested alternatives such as me cooking her a meal instead. This didn't exactly go down well.

I remembered that I'm getting paid the day before our anniversary, so am able to afford the meal, but now she doesn't want to go to the restaurant because of my supposed reluctance (I still wanted to go, was just worried about the amount I would spend, but that doesn't matter now).

So, Escapists, what can I do? What can I do to make my girl happy?

I get where you're coming from in a practical sense, but you're the one who made the money issue a thing. It sounds like you two are still more in the dating phase rather than the life partner sort of thing, so the details ultimately boil down to what you two's dynamic is like.

From here, if I understand what's up at this point, you have two choices: 1. Go on ahead to the resturant, and make a point to put your mutual enjoyment above the money, or 2, cook her a meal, and make it extra special.
Its pretty cold this time of year, but finding a nice place to eat the meal in would be lovely. Just be sure to keep the meal warm.
Also, how good are you in the kitchen, and would you need any recipe suggestions for choosing the latter?

We've sorted it out now. Or, at least, I have. Found a restaurant she likes, reasonable prices, taking her there as a surprise.

I was going to learn to make lasagne to surprise her as we both like Italian food, but now we're going for an Indian.

The money issue was made by me, and we settled that a while later. We have these arguments sometimes, but they're sorted out fairly quickly.
