The oldest RPG I played was some shareware thing called Dungeons of the Unforgiven, I dont think they ever finished the game off or at least released all of it, but if u can find it on the net somewhere then get it.

It may run at hyperspeed on modern pc's tho.

For true old school get DOSBOX and go for the Old D&D Gold BOx games like

Pools of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds.

Planescape will always remain high on my list, but I have a hard time going back to it for one simple reason. Your character walks too damn SLOW!
You can make them run by holding shift when you click.

Final Fantasy VI (known in the US as Final Fantasy III on the SNES) is, in my mind, the ultimate example of storytelling with the limited technology of the Super Nintendo. Absolutely incredible.

I'm pretty old so games I thought were the shit 10 years ago are still pretty nice looking. But you want some great classic gaming? Pick up a DS with either version of Etrian Odyssey, or a game called the Dark Spire.

Dark Spire is so old school it's peers include the original wizardry.

All great games.

I was gonna say the same thing, those games are so awesome. And Dark Spire is like 10 bucks new at gamestop(with a CD with the sound track) and Etrain Odyssey II is 20 when I bought it.
yea, it's really quite a package for dark spire. very good deal.

An image. For the ladies. The DS has quite a catalog of fantastic classic style games. Even a fair number of roguelikes.

I've gotten a craving for some classic RPG. And I mean classic as in really old. 2-D, pixley graphics, Tolkien setting, 'find secret sword in enchanted woods' type of thing, all that.

So come now. Dig in your memory banks - what RPG did YOU think was the shit 10+ years ago?
Shining Force 1 and 2, or the old Phantasy Star's are my suggestion to you.
That or the very first Wild Arms (easily one ofthe greatest RPG's ever). Good luck getting hold of it though.

Dragonwars it was back from around Bard's Tale and Wasteland but I've never seen a game since that has had a plot or premise quite like it. It needs to be remade but until then it was one of the best RPG's ever made (imo).

Aside from Daggerfall, Baldur's Gate 1+2, Icewind Dale 1+2, Ultima (take your pick) I would like to call attention to Betrayal at Krondor. That was a great game.
