So I saw someone bitching about open world games and it made me really want to play another open world RPG game or just a good RPG with sort of open world? When I googled it though I got the same old stuff I've clocked countless times, so hoping some of you guys have some ones for PC that I haven't heard of. To get it out of the way, I've played (from memory)

All witchers
All just cause
Arkam
The Fables
Red ded rededtionded
All dragon ages
All mass effect
All Fallouts
Bloodlines the vampire game
mount and blade
Amalur
Demon, Dark and Bloodborne Souls
GTAs
All diablos
Most popular diablo clones
Every elder scrolls
Two worlds
Prototypes
Infamous
Dogs being watched
All final fantasy
All breath of fire

And probably a shit load other ones that aren't coming to mind.

I'd prefer the game have at least decent graphics and combat, I can't really go back to oldschool graphics anymore, that said I don't mind pixel art if you happen to have an open world game in pixels.

I'm not opposed to JRPG's, but I'd like to avoid the ones with too cringe of a story.

Honestly I'd like something like Skyrim, only something I haven't played 20 billion times.

Cheers lads and ladettes.

A few I can think not on your list:

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen: A really fun open world RPG with excellent combat and NPC Party mechanics, definitely worth checking out.

Baldur's Gate Series (fairly open world), a more modern take is Pillars of Eternity but not sure how open it is myself.

Ultima series, probably the first open world games I played. If you want something more modern check out Shroud of the Avatar, a modern RPG made by the same guys who did Ultima.

Avernum Series: Very old school graphics but large open world, very similar to Ultima in many ways, also Geneforge and Avadon by the same developer.

Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor is open world and non-linear but... it's all Mordor, still very fun though.

The Risen series is an open world RPG series with a bit of a pirate theme to it, similar a bit to Two Worlds.

While not exactly as "open world" as some may want, I would highly recommend both Drakensang: The Dark Eye and Drakensang: The River of Time.

I been getting back into Dying Light recently, with it's expansive, umm...expansion (With customizable and upgradable death buggy!!! XD [small]I call her Fabricia, the Flesh Flower Fairy)[/small]. Also started it again on a higher difficulty and can say that there is a lot to appreciate in retrospec, it has a fairly effective survival horror feel at times, even when you think you're overpowered, you can still get your shit fucked up quicker than you can say "run like the brown wind, glorious Gengar flesh humanflea!!" it has it's flaws of paws course, but i'm digging it as a good send off for the zombie genre (shutup...I want to believe in an end!). There is a unique atmosphere that is perpetuated by an eerie soundtrack reminiscent of some Eastern European post-dystopia film that i seem to be vaguely remembering or maniacally imagining.

The dark souls-esque online night invasions are quite interesting and heart thumping, except when you go take a piss and come back to find the game already started and ended one. Cheers, game. Maybe the pause button works, i assumed otherwise.

When you say every, do you mean *every*? Like, TESI: Arena, TESII: Daggerfall, Fallout 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3...? Not that I doubt you, but I could see some people overlooking such titles in said series.

I love open worlds.

And I rather take the most barren open world game (FarCry 2)

Than the most scripted, linear, hallway game (Medal of Honor Warfighter)

This is actually the only one on your list I haven't played.

Thanks, I'm probably going to play this one after looking at it.

I am making a list of all the games I haven't played that are in this thread.

Very helpful.

If you happen to have a WiiU then Xenoblade Chronicles X.
I liked AssassinsCreed4, the sailing and such made it fun and open world-y
If not any of those, and looking at your own list... Then I am of no use here :/ sorry

How about Drakan?

I only played the one for the ps2, Drakan the Ancients Gates, which is pretty good. Figured the first one would be just as good. Makes me want to give it a try actually....

Don't worry, open world games will fade to the background soon. Everyone's making a class-based MP shooter instead

Dragon's Dogma definitely scratches some of that open world itch, but doesn't quite have the staying power as something like The Witcher or Skyrim does. Also just as a precautionary warning, it's possible to lock yourself out of certain quests altogether if you don't do them before continuing in the main questline, you can look these up and get the titles of them so you know what yo be sure you've checked off before continuing without it being spoiler-y

I'd also like to mention that there's a lot of sandbox style games that are open world, though I didn't count them initially since they use procedural generation rather than deliberate design but they are still quite fun. A few I have tried:

2D Platformer Sandbox:

Terraria
Starbound
Windforge

Roguelike:

UnReal World
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Forsaken Isle
Don't Starve

I also believe that the Divinity series is open world, Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity II, and Divinity Original Sin

You didn't mention any of the Saints Row games. I can't say anything about the first game, but all the others are great.

If you have any Nintendo systems, definitely look at the Xenoblade and Zelda games. Zelda may not be as "open world" as games like Elder Scrolls, but most of the games embrace some open world elements sooner or later.

Also, if you've never played Sid Meier's Pirates!, then it is on sale on GOG right now. Be sure you're getting the updated version, not the original (called Pirates! Gold Plus). It's one of the best and most open games I've ever played.

Retro City Rampage DX... It's open-world in 8-BIT form!

Other than that, I guess Sleeping Dogs, but I don't have the specs to run it...

Sleeping Dogs. It like Arkham and GTA mashed together. At least until half way through when you get guns, as it's just not as fun. I don't like the 3D GTAs but this I found engaging. You also have to be enough of a badass to join a gang but not too much as you are an undercover cop. This Hong Kong feels like Hong Kong, where as Watch Dogs Chicagi doesn't really match real life

Dying light was good too, especially since I didn't like Dead Island

Also, you played ESO too?

You should definitely play Sid Meier's Pirates! then. It is one of the best sandbox games I've played, where you have the whole of the Caribbean to play out your pirate fantasies. Mount and Blade is basically the same concept, but with third-person RTS combat and factions impossible to screw-up the balancing with.

Not sure about PC, but another great series of sandbox games is Shenmue. The only JRPG I can stand, because it has actual gameplay. I've only played the second game, and it is an open-world detective story where you travel around Hong Kong, trying to find your father's murderer. The combat system is no extremely elegant (big words for a JRPG), and plays to the strengths of Japanese developers. It's pretty much an entire fighting game of its own, with lots of cool tricks to master.

Yeah you know I bought Dragon's Dogma when it was on sale to kind of tide me over until Dark Souls 3 came out and I have complicated feelings about it. It seemed like it had a lot of questionable design decisions. I remember specifically early on a few combat sections with some bandits and an ogre that were just kicking my ass. I googled it and I found people explaining that they're really just difficulty checks that are meant to be run passed instead of fought. That just seemed so backwards to me, like me and this game are dating and it wanted to test me somehow. I don't know... I still have it installed but I don't really feel compelled to keep playing. I got to the main city and started progressing in the story and I think made my hunter into a ranger if I'm remembering correctly. The combat is pretty fun though and the pawn system is a really neat idea. Do you have a short elevator pitch that kind of explains what I can expect going forward if I pick it back up again?
