It's being developed by Propaganda Games. To give you insight in their past misdeeds, they developed the next gen Turok game.

OT: There are no good "pirate" games that I can think of apart from the Sid Meyers one but seeing as you already played that...

Get Mount & Blade if you want a game like Pirates.
How is Mount and Blade in any way like an open world game with pirates? The setting is in a medieval land called Calradia and your job is to conquer kingdoms to form your own or in the name of your king. Now, apart from the fact that it has nothing to do with pirates AND that conquering castles is extremely fucking boring and annoying, I see no reason why the anyone would recommend this game.

They... made Turok? I'm far less certain about Armada of the Damned then.

The game is obviously the same sort of game as Sid Meier's Pirates and there are not really many other games you can name that are.

Looks kinda ok, needs character customisation before it inspires me to spend £10 on it though.

Agreed. Mount & Blade is probably the closest game to Sid Meier's Pirates out there. It may take place on land, but the gameplay mechanics are all basically the same and playing as a bandit is sorta like playing a pirate if you squint your eyes really tight and pretend all the horses are tiny canoe.

Plus Mount & Blade is just an amazing game.
