In Annette's defense, she performed really well, and the old Nightwish songs she did were good. But the entire time I just kept saying, "Boy, I miss Tarja..."Lukirre said:
The only bad opening bands I've seen were both at Lynyrd Skynyrd shows. The first I can't remember the name of, the second was Gun. I don't know if any of you know Gun but the only song they are known for is a cover of "Word Up" which Korn later covered off them.
Nightwish when I saw them were supported by Tristania (Yeah, I saw them back when Tarja was singing ^5) who were meh, but I was just at the bar at that point waiting for Nightwish to come on.
Machinehead opened for Slipknot, which was awesome. Alestorm opened for Turisas, again awesome (so much so I'm going to the Alestorm/Sabbaton show in October even though I dislike Sabbaton) and Combi Christ opened for Rammstein. They were completely unknown to me but live they were really good, creating a good atmosphere.

I went to see Relient K back in May 2009, they were freaking amazing.
They were opened first by Runner Runner, a pop rock band that reminds me a bit of Tokyo Hotel, they were pretty good.
Second, this was back before they were a household name, Owl City. To put it bluntly, they sucked. All their songs sounded the same, they played for WAY too long (almost an hour, IIRC), and it was just boring.

When I went to see the Foo Fighters, the openers were Supergrass.
Both times I've been to see Biffy Clyro, the openers were Pulled Apart By Horses.
Supergrass were amazing, Pulled Apart were pretty good too.

Often the engineer will deliberately mix the opening band quieter, or only use half the PA system. Why? Well, sometimes they want the volume of the night to slowly build, sometimes they're worried about the integrity of the sound system and would rather blow out or damage the PA at the end of the night rather than the start, and sometimes, the main band's management actually requests this (the bigger the main act is, the more likely this is - we don't want that support band sounding better than the main act, do we? Gosh no, that would ruffle egos - so if they're quieter the theory goes that they probably won't sound as good either). If you're wondering why the main act often sounds so much better than the opening band, even though both bands might be two guitars, bass, drums and vocal going through the exact same PA system - well there you go. In other words, it's not always the opening band's fault that they suck, as their sound is often in the hands of someone who is on the payroll of the main band, so they have to do what the main band wants... and sometimes the main band wants to fuck them over. I can think of at least one big stadium tour with two very well-known bands (who shall remain nameless) where the PA was "saved" for the second act, because that band knew that their opening band was actually superior, so they wanted to even the scales by having a sonic advantage...
I saw Beat Union open for Flogging Molly when they played at the Roseland a few years back. Oddly enough that was also where I saw the worst opening band, it was a group of skinny white kids trying to do some metal shit and all I wanted to do was go up there and punch them all in the face.
The last concert I went to was Status Quo in 2007. Their opening band were a foursome called "B and the North" and really were rather good! The female lead (B, presumably) was good looking in the unconventional sense but she wasn't some conveyor belt pretty-arsed airhead that we usually get these days. She had a strong voice (I.e she didn't sound like a Barbie cartoon character), great interaction with the crowd and her hand alike and was rather handy with a Telecaster.
The lead guitarist (and occasional keyboardist too) was brilliant and I really would like B and the North to make it big, simply because they are good at what they do, know what they like and do it well. They got us warmed up and then some and got an excellent reception from the crowd!
Back in 2002 I went to see Bon Jovi at Huddersfield and, although for the life of me, I couldn't remember the second of the two support bands but they had a real job to do. For reasons never revealed, Bon Jovi were late coming on so the second support had to do a longer set and the crowd began to get restless, some even telling them to get lost.
That was unfair because a) It wasn't their fault b) They were doing well, all things considered and c) They were really good. I just wish I could remember what they were called!
