Operation: Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - What is it like?

I've heard some pretty mixed reviews and would like to know what it's like before I think about buying/renting it.

Can I have some key aspects to what make it good if it is good?

And some bad points if it is not so good?

I just bought Operation Flashpoint 2, the PC version, from Steam. I have completed only the first mission in the single player campaign game mode, and I'm already a bit disappointed.

The main reason for my disappointment is that it feels like a clumsy console port - I think the developers would prefer it if you used a gamepad rather than a mouse and keyboard. You can tell from how you have to laboriously navigate through the pretty but slow menus, and the amount of bugs related to keyboard mapping (check Google, my first one was not being able to exit the Inventory screen menu because I had remapped the Use key). Also at times you can't scroll or right-click on the in game map, making the map completely useless. Restarting the game seems to fix it.

My second disappointment was the AI. Ok, this is a game with huge maps, and you may want to travel large distances with your AI team mates, right? OK, so let's get in a jeep (fiddly with the "quick" menu) then go to the map screen. If the game allows it, you may be able to scroll the map to the location you want to go to. In my case it was to the top of the initial small Island. After right-clicking on the location and selecting move-to, I wait and watch. After a small delay (presumably path-finding calculations) my driver sets off with all of us in the jeep. Cool, I think. Then he veers off the road into the woods, and gets stuck in a bunch of trees, inching forward and reversing in a never ending circle.
This is very, very poor.

I exited the game at this point; not going back till they patch it.

One Shot Kill gameplay. Every inch of progress has to be planned and taken very carefully. You get shot. Once. And it's game over. One for the masochists.

Well the rule of FPS's applies to all, if you let the A.I. drive you will have a very stupid and humiliating death.

As for my opinion on the game I'm finding it to be enjoyable, if not frustrating. Currently I'm stuck at a point were this village gets assualted by enemy forces and you have to defend it. And I'v had no luck finding a walkthrough.

I got it for Xbox 360, their seems to be less bugs on the console version but there is still a few. AI is pretty bad but I play CO-OP anyways. Another thing that isn't the games fault is that when you join a ranked match 9/10 times the leader of your teams squads will not know how to move them meaning they will stay at spawn - so you'l lose alot. So ye AI is fucked and alot of bugs - still worth it though if they patch it up or you play CO-OP.

Hmm, I've been considering getting this but I'm not sure what to do. I would wait for some patches and hopefully increased quality, but the rush of Holiday games starts later this month and if I don't buy it now I probably won't have time to play it for a while.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a joke. Codemasters promised a game that would live up to the name of the original Operation Flashpoint, and what we got was a dumbed down console port with bad AI and a lot of bugs (well... That's the PC version anyway).

The textures are shite, the draw distance is huge, but for some reason it won't draw trees and grass out more than 500m or so, the AI is laughable (they will scream at you and do nothing if you get close enough), there is no 'free look' when on foot or driving a vehicle, you can absorb about 8-10 shots before dying, there is NO copy protection on the disk (STUPID move Codemasters), and sometimes enemies can take an entire magazine to kill!

Don't buy Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. If you want a mil-sim, but ArmA 2. If you want a decent, arcady military FPS, wait for Modern Warfare 2.

The game is great and the co-op is extremely fun. A nice, refreshing change from those run n' gun games. Sometimes, the friendly AI can annoy you (for example, the medic doesn't treat the wounded soldiers until you tell him to do so), so I suggest you to play in coop.

It sometimes feels easy, but sometimes brings me to a point where I yell, slam my fists against the desk and quit the game with alt + tab, because I just died the 7th time from the same motherf*cking gunship.

Not as realistic as ARMA (you can't remove the crosshair and you have to stop while giving commands) but still pretty good.

Oh, and don't even try to get AI in the drivers seat, you'll die from laughter.

[Offtopic]To thread starter: I came to this thread to talk about Operation Flashpoint, not Dragon Rising. Please be more precise in your thread title. Now I'have to find somewhere else to praise the original Operation Flashpoint :)

That was the only word I needed to see. I have a special place in my heart for these guys. They have these brilliant ideas for games but they can't seem to find someone who can build the games. What a shame.

If you have a PC buy Arma2
If you dont ... there is nothing like OF2 in consoles, buy it. (even if the ai is the worst in years)

huh see i disagree with alot of the negative stuff. i mean this game reminds me of the orignal ghost recon, basically take things slow and plan everything. the game does get really fun when you find good weapon drop e.g. the javalin is awesome and makes killing sams easy because you can take the out from 3km away and the queen bee a heat seeking rocket. visuals are good and AI is no the worst ive ever seen but it could be better.

the worse thing ive found with this game is the online multiplayer. basically ive tried 20 odd times to get into a match and so far ive only managed to get into one which was quite laggy and then i lost connection. 9/10 times i dont join a match and when i do join my ping is in the hundreds. i dont know why its that bad because my connection is fine on all of my other online games. so it must be their servers or something but its the worst online ive ever seen

I keep hearing the same line over and over again.

that is, "you get shot once and its over". THIS IS NOT TRUE!

You get wounded and you bleed you can get shot in many places and you fall to the ground but you can still call a medic and survive, yes sometimes you get fatally shot in an instant but a lot of the time you survive.
