I recently just got this game and love it. It is the most realistic shooter I have played to date. To me that is a huge selling point of a FPS. It is the closet thing I have played that lets you use real tactics. I love that level of realism in shooters. This got me thinking and I wanted to know what everybody thought about realism in FPSs. Do you like your FPS realistic or not? Do you like having to equate for bullet drop or not? Basically stuff like that. Granted OF:DR wasn't the best of games, but it was a big step in the way of realism. I just wanted to see what people thought on going in that direction.

I don't like realism that much. Since most game's definition of realism is regenerating health and brown/grey environments.

I love games that let me do outrageous things. I know people out there love realism, and I can respect that. But to have pretty much every game these days shooting for it? Its just stupid.

I say bring back the days of running at 20mph and carrying 12 giant guns!

I like outrageous non-competetive types of fun. Where everybody isn't going "How did that fucker kill me?!" and instead going "HAHA that fucker just killed me! I'll get him for that!"

Outrageous in the sense of Duke Nukem type of fun. Or GTA Vice City fun.

But Operation Flashpoint? Really? I hated that game it was SORTOF realistic but it was designed poorly and the gameplay wasn't very enjoyable.

I hated the game to be honest.

While it did its job well, and it certainly felt realistic, I just found it to be no fun at all.

The aiming felt clunky and awkward, the maps were barren, ugly and dull and the checkpointing was rather frustrating in the current climate where we've gotten used to it being more forgiving.

Personally I do....

The bit that pisses me of the most about current generation FPS isn't the so called realism... it is that they are not realistic at all while selling themselves as realistic. Oh sure, they try and make it look as realistic as possible but that doesn't a realistic game make. You could model, say, New York down to the very pebble in the gutter but if you are lacking a system of game-play which gives equally as much realism then your just making a pretty looking standard FPS.

Oh... and making it so one bullet kills someone isn't some how magically turning it to a realistic shooter. Wish more game designers would start looking into ways to mimic even more. Say... a health system which doesn't involve waiting for the blood to fall off your face or searching for medpacks as if your doing a treasure hunt. Fair enough though, it makes it very hard to play game if you knocked flat on your arse after one shotgun blast and can't do anything more then cringe in pain while the medic drags your arse to cover, stems the bleeding while screaming for a damn evac team to get you to a mash unit.

But the answer to that... SCI FI! It is like magic for the modern universe.

I played ARMA and the physics of the rifles weren't as realistic as the OP:DR. OP:DR was the first game I played that let me aim a rifle like a real one. The M4 fired like it does in the real world. Abet without the recoil feeling. First shooter I played where real world skills translated into better ability. ARMA did let you go third person though and that gives you a more realistic line of sight, though you can see the back of your own head. The biggest problem I had with ARMA was physics of the bullets. Mainly in stopping power.

I know that the game needed a lot of work. What I am saying is that I would like to see a line of shooters go farther this way. I love me some crazy fun shooters don't get me wrong, goodness I adore Timesplitters, but I also love a great war simulator, and would like to see more of those as it is my profession.

It was a good idea but poorly executed, it felt as if they rushed its development.

And dont get me started on the AI...

But its nice, i like it, realism has potential, if you like realism try Red Orchestra Ostfront 1943-45, or wait for its sequel, Stalingrad! Awh Yeah.

Seriously, best simulated tank battles ever.
