The most realistic military shooter that I have ever played is America's army. It looks like that is set to change with my recent discovery of Operation Flashpoint 2. Until very recently I had never played or heard of this game before, it looks to be the thing that I have been craving for years.
You play as a US marine and the battle takes place on an island just north of Japan. This island has been found to contain large amounts of natural gases. Naturally, everybody wants a piece. You fight against the Chinese. I won't bother hyping this up anymore, the videos can speak for themselves.

Did you ever play the original? I've always thought that was also more realistic (mabye not in graphics but definately in other respects) than Americas army.
The graphics looks pretty damn good in this too, hopefully it keeps the realistic gameplay.
(and the possibility of a Pink Floyd quote when you die)

Ever played ARMA?

Yeah, it has a stupid name, but it's basically Operation Flashpoint mk.2.

The first time that I'd heard of this series was a few weeks ago. Do they have any games on the 360? My PC is poor so I doubt I would be able to play it on that if they don't have an existing console version.

I think there was one on the original x-box, maybe it works on 360 (Operation Flashpoint:Elite, I think that was the name anyway)

I don't think ARMA and the original Op.F. have steep system requirements, you can always look at that "can you run it?" website.

I'd say try out red orchestra too, it's more realistic than Americas Army, but it has a small lack of polish, but it's still very well done. Heck I heard it started out as a mod of UT. I also remember when WWII online first came out you had to like, reload your gun with 3 buttons lol.

As for Flashpoint 2, I think Codemasters knows what the original fans want, but with it being on consoles too, I really hope they take GSC's advice and don't try to make it any less difficult or anything, Soul Calibur 4 already toned it down for the newcomers and that ruined story and arcade mode, so with this franchise being incredibly realistic, I hope it stays that way and doesn't become another Rainbow Six Vegas or something.

I'll probably end up getting one of the earlier games, if I can run it, because I'm so eager to get this game. Hopefully, this doesn't become an Assassins creed. I waited in anticipation a whole year for AC only to be disappointed. It's still a good game but they over-hyped it.
Why would they lower the difficulty level for consoles? I understand toning the graphics etc. down because PCs can handle more. I don't understand why they would make it less challenging though.

the one thing which makes this game come down on my 'looking forward' list is the fact that it is made by Codemasters in house studios instead of Bohemian Interactive.

the Reason Bohemia Interactive games where so realistically good is because Operation Flashpoint and Arma where based of the military simulator they constructed called Vertual Battle Simulator which is used by the armed forces for training with diffrent levels of tactics and combat.

basically with BI we are using a dumbed down simulator used by the Military... it will be hard to see what Codemasters will do with it.

If BI could take their VBS2 game and put it on a standard computer format it would be the Best game every created as it is one of the most realistic simulators in the world, capable of handling completely Destructable enviornments, Round penetration, operable doors, destructable enviornments and real time geomodification.

Well, crap. OFP and ArmA are too complex to be properly ported to console. If the PC version of OFP2 is anything like the console versions it might be dumbed down to the point of being another CoD.
I like the CoD games, even the more recent consolized ones. But I like the comparative complexity of the OFP games and I fear that it won't make the transition without a radically simplified interface. Compare Morrowind to Oblivion and you'll see what I mean.

OFP was on consoles, And they didn't change much.

The only thing they would change is maybe worse graphics to keep a decent FPS on the consoles.(The 360 is what I fear will keep the ps3 back from almost being able to do 100% of this game like the PC.)
