I was a bit interested in defiance so I thought I'd check out a few videos since it (apparently) got released this week. What I noticed in these videos: The AI is atrocious. Even TB made a video on it. It's nearly on the level of MindJack or Smite's practice matches.

However, I still have an open mind(until I get into the Global Agenda 2 beta anyways...). If you have been playing Defiance, what are your opinions on it? Cheers.

Yeah, I watched the video but he also mentioned it wasn't really a true review yet, he'd release the WTF is some time later after he gets more familiarity with the game. And also he did mention not to take it as anything for now.

As for me - I only heard of Defiance two weeks ago and found out it was a shooter. I undestood it was an MMO yesterday. I don't really know anything more than that. Oh, and they have TV series or something that go with it...somehow. I couldn't be bothered to look up pre release information and reviews, but I'd be more inclined to hear what people have to say about it.

Clearly not ready for public at this stage so I say give it two months or more.
But even if all the kinks are ironed out their design is about 1/10 as interesting as Borderlands and that doesn't go very high in the first place.

If one needs another MMO to waste time it might as well be this, but it is no more interesting then all the rest.

Meh. Back to spamming Duke for a GA2 pre-alpha invite and making compliments on his shiny bald head.

Edit :eek:oh, got a question so this post isn't useless. How are the quests? Go kill X collect Y then go to Z?

So far I've been enjoying the game, it starts off slow and very easy because they're hoping to entice people who watch the TV series to buy the game and want to ease them into it slowly but it gets harder further into the game and the enemies get a bit smarter.

I'd ignore anything TB releases about the game, his short video regarding the AI actually pushed me to unsubscribe from his channel due to how ridiculously biased it was against the game (Seriously, posting a video about the AI in a bloody tutorial where every enemy is braindead by design and exist more as scenery than something to actually fight).

Questing is a bit more objective based than other MMOs so you don't get 'Kill X number of Y' and are more likely to see stuff like 'Capture this objective', 'Hold out against these enemies', 'Activate these switches', 'Clear out this area', I'm not far into the game yet though so I can't give a fair assessment.

EDIT: Oh yes, and there are things like challenges and dynamic events too, most of the dynamic events are little things that won't offer a reward but are just there to do if you want to but you also get big ones called 'Ark Falls' which are similar to the rifts in Rift.

In closing, it's a fun game but if you don't have the money or aren't sure about it yet then wait and get it when it's on sale (Or wait for a free trial), it's also more fun with friends.

EDIT 2: Also, if you're in the market for a new bag and are seriously considering buying the game the Messenger Bag you get with the Ultimate Edition is surprisingly good quality for the price (£60).

I've played the Beta and Alpha versions prior to launch, and I must tell you that lack of money if the only thing that kept me from getting it at launch. It has some glaring issues, but come now, what MMO doesn't in the first few months? I see a lot of potential, and I'm definitely getting it first chance I get.

The game is a lot of fun if you give it a chance. So far I have not seen a "Kill X and return"
I was in 2 PC betas and the PS3 beta and the missions are more "Go to this area to interact with this object while a lot of enemies attack you" or some ask you to defend NPCs.

While you are exploring the Bay Area you can sometimes see NPCs that need to be revived and then you fight waves of enemies, there are arkfalls which are a lot of fun to do, there are trials where some want you to race the time and other trials like that. To anyone who liked Borderlands I would recommend the game because they are both similar in many aspects.

The one word to sum up Defiance? 'Adequate'. It's a word very suited to Trion's style of making games. Rift and Defiance are both 'adequate'. It fails to stir any opinion in me, other than that.

Erm, TB did explicitly point out that the video does not necessarily represent the game as a whole and indeed mentioned that it could only be the tutorial areas. He wasn't judging the game, as much as just sharing something funny he found.

How often does he release a video like that one? Almost never.

He claims that he takes pride in providing critical analysis of games so players can make their own judgment on its worth but that video was purely negatively biased with the shallow justification that he hadn't played further into the game yet so he didn't know better.

He doesn't seem stupid, he should know by now that he should play a game before releasing a video making snap judgments about it and that video has done nothing but hurt his credibility.

I've been doing alpha and beta for the past 3 months on the game, and while I would still recommend you get it, I would also recommend you wait until they have fixed a number of issues and settled into what they actually want. There are a few stipulations as to who I would recommend buy this game though.

If you like gear progression and like feeling like you are getting stronger as time goes on, this game is not for you. Defiance uses a linear path progression system. That means that you can finish the game with the starting pistol, and many people have gone on to prove this. There are levels in the game, but the most important thing they give you are ego points, those points allow you minor upgrades, but nothing game stopping.

If you don't enjoy games that limit you to two weapons on a load out, this game isn't for you. Though it is pretty simple after you get a few ego levels in you to just create a few load outs with your favorite guns and swap between them.

If you don't like bunny hopping and rocket spam, this game is not for you. PvP has degraded into pure rocket spam, grenade spam, and bunny hopping, because that is what's effective.

The entire game is balanced around PvP, so enemies get harder and harder, but your weapons don't really change. There are minor variances between a white weapon and a purple weapon, but nothing game stopping.

You can level up your weapon skills, but you have to keep changing weapons in that type (I.E. you use your favorite assault rifle and max it out on experience, now you no longer gain experience towards your assault rifle score, you have to find a whole new assault rifle to continue gaining experience).

The AI is terrible, and will track you down even if you one shot your enemy and then go into cloak mode (invisible). In fact the only real difference cloak makes is that you get to regen your shield since they stop shooting at you while it is up. They will continue to follow you if they are already aware of you though.

If you plan on sniping be prepared to not be able to use the max range on the sniper rifle. The max range is listed somewhere around 200m, but at 80m you reach the draw distance for characters and enemies. This means that even though your sniper can hit something from 200m (and in fact does greater crit range the further away you are) you won't be able to see or hit anything further away than about 80m (though if you get to the max draw distance and zoom in on them then back up slowly you can get out to about 120m or so).

If you are looking for any kind of realism this game isn't for you (though I don't consider this to be a bad thing). It will take you multiple headshots with any weapon you choose. You can get the highest damage weapon in the game (barring shotguns) and crit headshot the later enemies or players and it will not kill them. In fact it will take you at least two headshots with that gun. If you are using ARs or SMGs plan on it taking between 10 and 50 headshots (unless it is a boss, then expect way more). The only gun you can get a one shot kill with (most of the time)is the double barrel shotgun, but you will be fighting so many enemies that the reload will likely kill you.

Do buy this game if you enjoyed borderlands. This game is almost exactly like borderlands online (with the exception of there being no progression on the weapons). So if you really enjoyed borderlands, but wanted a more pvp oriented version of the game, this is your game.

The storyline is great and well worth the price of admission. I also enjoyed the "story missions" (the missions that will have some kind of show tie in) quite a bit. There are special missions that you can do that are instanced and require a group (though I am convinced you can do them solo if you are careful) that have different stories all to themselves. There are challenges and side missions galore and many other things to keep you entertained for quite awhile (not to mention a soft level cap of about 5000).

So, if you are not turned off by bugs and glitches and prefer to get into a game as early as possible then you should go for it now. If bugs and glitches "bug" you, or you would rather wait for a more polished version of the game, then wait a few months to pick it up. If anything I said about the game sounds like a deal breaker, than avoid it at all costs. I personally intend to pick the game up after the price has gone down and the second season of the show is out, so that I know this isn't going to be something that just dies off quickly. I also believe that it will end up going F2P some point in the future, and I don't see the point in paying the largest amount of money for the (likely to be) worst version of the game.

Actually he was right on the mark about the AI, it only gets slightly better. The only time the AI makes an intelligent move is when it is scripted to. Charging enemies charge, shooting enemies go to the closest cover and shoot at you, only moving when you throw a grenade (and even then only occasionally). I can forgive the beastial enemies because that is their nature, but cyborgs with advanced AI (storyline wise) using the same tried and failed techniques as their lesser brethren screams time constraints.

Once again though, this isn't bad enough to make me not want to buy the game. I am just going to hold off for a year or so. This way they have time to fix the things that sucked about the game. I could tell that they wanted to make a great product, and they definitely had passion about the ideas they had. They just didn't have enough time to make those things reality.

I've played about 4 hours of it and I'm enjoying it. I have to say that the scenery is quite dull and the enemies aren't that varied there are some mutants, cyborgs and hellbugs and that's all I've come across. I've never played an MMO before so I can't compare it to any other MMOs.

TB posted another video about defiance, though he talks about other things for about half of it
it's named "VLOG - Are you still there ?"
