Borderlands
In Borderlands you play as one of four vault hunters, who... hunt for the vault. And that's it really, this game isn't really story heavy. The vault is really just a story macguffin to give you a reason to go these places and kill these dudes.
Borderlands is an FPS Dungeon Crawler hybrid. You go around killing enemies with the standard array of guns (Pistol, Rifle, shotgun, ect.), but you also get loot drops off of enemies and gain levels.
Game Play:4
I'll admit I don't play all that many FPSs, so I don't have much of a meter stick to compare with, but I think Borderlands pulls off it's, shoot anything that moves, gameplay well. The different guns do well in separate situations and choosing the best gun for the situation works out well. On the downside the game gets repetitive as when you've cleared out one nest of raiders you've pretty much cleared them all.
Play Time:3
Borderlands definitely has the play time category in the bag with about 40 hours of game play for one play though (with all the DLC. I got this as the GOTY edition). Especially considering most modern AAA FPSs excuse for a single player is only around 5-10 hours. Also there is a second play through with upped enemy and weapon levels, and 4 different characters who have unique play styles. So a possible 320 hours of gameplay, for 2 play throughs with each character.
Atmosphere:1
Borderlands really does create an cartoony style with it's use of cell shading and it's dark humor. But it looses points for being the same grey brown mess as every other FPS, even if it's cell shaded. And with no story to speak of I can't give it full points.
Overall:8
I have to say I really did enjoy Borderlands. Though that could just be because I am very susceptible to skinner box techniques (random loot drops and leveling system primarily). I am disappointed that the games graphics weren't so colorful when a lot of the games characters were. I should point out here I only played single player, 'cause well, that's, for the most part, all I do. I also played it on PC, as there was a steam sale on it for $7.50 for the GOTY edition. But I would say this game is definitely worth the $50 it cost at launch.
