Organ Donor i have a issue with it?

There My Organs i prefer it to go to someone worthy like children not some smoking drug addict.

Yes, because smoking drug addicts need to die.
A life is a life. These people deserve to live as much as anyone else.

Would it be nice if some sweet little kid got your organ? Sure. But who would CHOOSE to save the life of an addict? Nobody would. They'd be like you, deciding they deserve their death. That these people are not allowed a second chance.

I am reasonably sure just to GET on the organ list you have to prove you plan on giving up your vice anyway. A lot of people don't, of course, but who's to say they outweigh the people who do?

Im more than happy to give my organs away when im dead, all of them. In my opinion im going to be dead anyway, I may as well give my organs to a good cause like saving someones life even if they are a smoker, drug user or whatever. Their lives are just as worthy as anyone else.

I think Organ donation should be the default position, there is no sane, logical reason why you wouldn't give your organs away.

Now i had to get Photo ID so i can go out on my 18th and i saw 'do you want to be a Organ Donar?' [its the gist of it]

and i wondered will i be able to make restrictions to who my organs go too. But you can't according to my roommate and i can't really find anything to say, except some stupid thing in which a guy didn't want his organs to go to a Black person. but none the less.

I WOULD give my organs to certain people, BUT I don't want my Lungs to got to a smoker who smoked all his life and is now ill. they can take my organs sure but i don't want it to go to someone who killed there organs with liquor drugs or Smoking. What's to stop them ruining my organs?

think the transplant list requires people to give up activities bad for the organ while there on it so for lungs it could be several years without smoking same with the liver could be a while without drinking

Well, I learnt from watching Desperate Housewives that you could give your kidneys to specific people. I don't know about other organs, but I don't see why it would be any different.

You're talking about something you can give while living. But the OP is talking about the organ donor card you get on your license, which is any and all organs that are still good should you demise in an untimely way.
Those are given indiscriminately and you can't decide who they go to, though if you had a family member who needed it at that time they would probably get it just because the tissue type would be a close match. But you don't get to say who gets it because doctors who perform the transplants and take care of patients aren't allowed to judge people based on their life choices.

As a person who actually needs an organ, it is a tough situation to be in, everyone wants to live, nobody wants to die because someone judged them and ruled against them. I personally need a kidney, and I've never done anything that would progress the deterioration of my kidneys, but I could not live with myself if I got put over another person because they happened to drink and sped up the deterioration a bit and that person happened to die. Actually since learning that a lot of people die on waiting lists for organs I took myself off it and am refusing an organ transplant. I cannot live with the notion that I would live over another person.

So wait, you are actually risking your life so an anonymous stranger may live...you may be the most altruistic man I have ever heard of.

That was just so insanely damaging mentally to a teenager and I never really had anyone to talk to about it; and I just devalued my own life and in the last 10 years. I push people away, I don't make friends, I don't get to know anyone, and I really haven't done anything with my existence. I really no longer see myself as a person so why should I take something lifesaving from another person who has family and friends and an actual life to live?

I'm pretty sure that smokers and such are at the end of the waiting list for getting organs. If your family member and needed an organ and you died it would probably go to them because they're least likey to reject it. If you know you're dying you could probably talk about it with a doctor but again I'm not sure.

Firstly, as far as I'm aware, even if you are a card carrying organ donor, your next of kin still makes the final decision, I believe. And recently more and more countries are changing to opt-out organ donation, so that wouldn't be a problem soon.

Thing is, good organs aren't in huge supply. Most people die in a way that makes a lot of their organs not suitable for transplant. This means that organs go to the most worthy. An alcoholic is going to be wayyyy down the list for any sort of transplant, as are smokers. They tend to give organs to the person who is most likely to have the longest life.

So although you can't specify what type of person get's it, you can be assured that it probably goes to someone who takes care of themselves.

There is a waiting list, and you have to get approved for transplant. Smokers are less likely to get your lungs than someone who's lungs were damaged through no fault of their own, same with the rest of your organs.
You can't specifically say "I don't want person who does X to have my organs" but there is a committee or whatever who decides that for you.

If my organ will improve someone's quality of life, they're welcome to it.

Those who need it due to self-inflicted reasons have to prove they have given up smoking/drinking etc. But still, I'd have no problem with them taking my Liver so long as I didn't need it any more.

Better not tick lungs and liver then, since in all likelihood those are the people who will inevitably get them.

In fact, a donor set of lungs will more likely go to someone with Cystic Fibrosis - for most lung cancer or emphysema cases a lung transplant isn't feasible.

To the OP, seriously? Are you really that opposed to giving someone the chance at life, to live and experience their family and friends, and to learn from their own mistakes? It's rather superficial and presumptuous to do what you're proposing, in my opinion. Fair enough if we were talking about a kidney transplant here, or something that could be happen while you were still alive, but if you're dead what use are your organs. It's selfish to discriminate if you've chosen to donate your organs.

As it stands, thousands die every year while waiting for organ transplants, over-selectivity isn't going very far towards solving that problem.

Personally speaking, i'd feel pretty goddamn terrible if i got the kidney that could've saved your life, and you refused it simply because of low self-esteem.

The value of your life is completely self-determined. If you don't feel like you deserve a second chance then go out there and earn one. Make your life worth living. There's no reason for you to give up just yet.

The people waiting for organs have a lot of rules to follow to be eligible, i.e. no smoking, no drinking etc. Organs are rare, hospitals aren't going to give them to people who would just go on and destroy them again.

Identified donor or not your next of kin get the final call. Having 'donor' on an ID card is just a way that the deceased can inform their next of kin of their wishes.

Remember: For you to be a candidate as a donor you have to die in hospital - generally of a brain injury as it doesn't damage other organs. That's why doctors like motorcyclists.

Donor waiting lists are ridiculously strict by the way. Things like livers and heart valves and lungs and whatnot often go to people who have abused their own, that's just the way of the world. Things are taken on a case-by-case basis though and if somone fails to prove themselves as worthy they get skipped over. Vital organs that can be donated are in incredibly short supply and in general doctors are very careful to make damn sure they're not wasted.

I really do sympathise with your point. Some Australian woman (the deatails are hazy) who was on heroin got some new organs, and she went straight back to heroin again. If your going to throw away another chance at life like that, well, I'd be very hard pressed to donate to her.

The only way I see you getting around this is to find specific people to donate to.

One point to consider, though, is that maybe the person who destroyed their body has had a problem that wasn't their fault. he heroin woman may have gotten addicted young. A smoker may have been raised in a community of smokers. These are things you've got to consider.

If I was an organ donor, would they use my body for science testing or have med students practice on it? (I can imagine them snickering since I'm TG). I remember reading a book about what happens to put whose bodies become test subjects and the last thing I want to do is be rotting on some body farm or testing land mines. When I got my license renewed, I removed the organ donor portion so... would my organs go to someone who needs a transplant only if I put it back on there? Or is my body basically up for grabs if I did?

Last I checked, smokers and drinkers get sent to the bottom (if not removed completely) from transplant lists until they can prove they won't fuck them up again.
