The way it works in the US, the donor sticker on the driver's license doesn't donate your body to medical science. When you die, they check to see if you're a donor, then they will take out any viable organs, then sew you back up good enough for an open-casket funeral. (Assuming the manner of your death wasn't extreme enough to preclude it) You get to donate, but your family still gets a funeral.cerealnmuffin said:If I was an organ donor, would they use my body for science testing or have med students practice on it? (I can imagine them snickering since I'm TG). I remember reading a book about what happens to put whose bodies become test subjects and the last thing I want to do is be rotting on some body farm or testing land mines. When I got my license renewed, I removed the organ donor portion so... would my organs go to someone who needs a transplant only if I put it back on there? Or is my body basically up for grabs if I did?
Common sense. i would like to think that people who get an organ transplant take care of the new organ. Except for dipshits like that old football guy.Trezu said:What's to stop them ruining my organs?
Plenty of ppl have already pointed out but substance abusers need a long period of being "clean and sober" before they're even put on the list (and even then the list is LOOOOONG).Trezu said:There My Organs i prefer it to go to someone worthy like children not some smoking drug addict.Woodsey said:Pretty sure people who self-inflict the damage are put lower on the waiting list.
And if you're dead, why would you care anyway who they go to?
the first part is a one in a million chance, if you can honestly find me an article anywhere online with proof on ANYONE accomplishing that, then i will agree, but seriously? a drug addict doing that?Sonic Doctor said:Of course it is hypothetical, but it is valid:Trezu said:There My Organs i prefer it to go to someone worthy like children not some smoking drug addict.Woodsey said:Pretty sure people who self-inflict the damage are put lower on the waiting list.

The drug addict(who of course had to get fully clean for a good while before getting on the list), doesn't get your organ and dies. Oops, this former drug addict would have turned his or her life around and went to school and became a cancer researcher and found the cures for the last remaining cancers.
Now, your organ did go to little innocent boy who meets your requirements and he lives. Oh no! Say it ain't so, he grew up to become the next Hitler.
One can never know what will happen, so that is why it must be anonymous.

Most of them are probably good and decent and have people that love them, so what if they made a mistake when they were younger they haven't been able to fix. Would you deny someone with high cholesterol and heart disease a new heart just because they've eaten too much fatty food over the course of their life? Don't be so fucking high and mighty.
edit- I've marked down everything as being good for donation except my corneas. Call me irrational, but I don't want them taking my eyes!
Exactly my views on it. Sure, they may go to someone who isn't all that deserving.TheEvilCheese said:My opinion; I'm dead.
If my organ will improve someone's quality of life, they're welcome to it.
Those who need it due to self-inflicted reasons have to prove they have given up smoking/drinking etc. But still, I'd have no problem with them taking my Liver so long as I didn't need it any more.
theyre really strict in some places. to even be on the list you have to quit smoking/drinking for lung/liver transplants.Trezu said:to a smoker who smoked all his life and is now ill. they can take my organs sure but i don't want it to go to someone who killed there organs with liquor drugs or Smoking. So what do you think about Organ Donoring?
Do you agree with me?
Shud there be restrictions on Organ Donoring like make it only family/friends can have organs?
What if the child grows up and starts smoking or doing drugs? It's not out of the realm of possibility.Trezu said:There My Organs i prefer it to go to someone worthy like children not some smoking drug addict.Woodsey said:Pretty sure people who self-inflict the damage are put lower on the waiting list.

Unfortunately, perpetuating most myths of those sort fall close to being criminally stupid.p4riah said:Also - and I'm glad that only one person so far has made the claim - the idea that doctors sometimes let donors die so that they can harvest the organs IS COMPLETELY FALSE. They often don't even look at your drivers license beyond confirming your identity, because it contains no medical records. The DOCTORS usually don't see it at all. Some nurse might, but only so they know who you are so they can get your medical records and get you to surgery. In the ER, the doctors probably don't even know your NAME. They know what's wrong with you, and any medical conditions that will directly effect how they fix you.
Perpetuating that myth is almost criminally stupid. It has caused so many people to reject the idea of organ donation without ever giving it serious thought.
What about your corneas? They're one of the most transplanted tissues and no one will miss them because even open caskets are pretty much universally close eyed.Death God said:I'm an organ donor myself but I am a specific donor. I am only giving my lungs, kidneys, and liver. The rest of my organ are staying inside me so that is something for my family to bury. But they whole point in giving organs is to give a second chance. Somebody screws their second chance, oh well. I'm dead so what do I care what happens to my other organs?
