If I was an organ donor, would they use my body for science testing or have med students practice on it? (I can imagine them snickering since I'm TG). I remember reading a book about what happens to put whose bodies become test subjects and the last thing I want to do is be rotting on some body farm or testing land mines. When I got my license renewed, I removed the organ donor portion so... would my organs go to someone who needs a transplant only if I put it back on there? Or is my body basically up for grabs if I did?
The way it works in the US, the donor sticker on the driver's license doesn't donate your body to medical science. When you die, they check to see if you're a donor, then they will take out any viable organs, then sew you back up good enough for an open-casket funeral. (Assuming the manner of your death wasn't extreme enough to preclude it) You get to donate, but your family still gets a funeral.

So put on that sticker without worry. The whole donate your body to medical science thing is a separate piece of paperwork.

Also - and I'm glad that only one person so far has made the claim - the idea that doctors sometimes let donors die so that they can harvest the organs IS COMPLETELY FALSE. They often don't even look at your drivers license beyond confirming your identity, because it contains no medical records. The DOCTORS usually don't see it at all. Some nurse might, but only so they know who you are so they can get your medical records and get you to surgery. In the ER, the doctors probably don't even know your NAME. They know what's wrong with you, and any medical conditions that will directly effect how they fix you.

Perpetuating that myth is almost criminally stupid. It has caused so many people to reject the idea of organ donation without ever giving it serious thought.

Common sense. i would like to think that people who get an organ transplant take care of the new organ. Except for dipshits like that old football guy.

Pretty sure people who self-inflict the damage are put lower on the waiting list.

And if you're dead, why would you care anyway who they go to?
There My Organs i prefer it to go to someone worthy like children not some smoking drug addict.
Plenty of ppl have already pointed out but substance abusers need a long period of being "clean and sober" before they're even put on the list (and even then the list is LOOOOONG).
But then, since OP hasn't researched this for himself nor acknowledged the other posters that have said this I suppose he's just looking for affirmation from anyone out there that he's justified in not donating his organs.

I personally wish more countries had an opt-out system (where you are automatically a donor unless you sign and send off a form) simply cos its quite difficult to get organs in the state that can be re-used (except maybe motorcyclists)
Maybe all OP needs is to really befriend someone needing an organ to realise his pettiness

Of course it is hypothetical, but it is valid:

The drug addict(who of course had to get fully clean for a good while before getting on the list), doesn't get your organ and dies. Oops, this former drug addict would have turned his or her life around and went to school and became a cancer researcher and found the cures for the last remaining cancers.

Now, your organ did go to little innocent boy who meets your requirements and he lives. Oh no! Say it ain't so, he grew up to become the next Hitler.

One can never know what will happen, so that is why it must be anonymous.
the first part is a one in a million chance, if you can honestly find me an article anywhere online with proof on ANYONE accomplishing that, then i will agree, but seriously? a drug addict doing that?

all i can say is "lulz"

i would give my organs to child hitler himself if needed, hopefully in that aspect i would be able to shed some light on the dear boy and I would have a positive effect on his mental thoughts early on before he turned into the monster he is remembered for

Alcoholics an smokers are low prirority recipients. That means that while there is people that didn't ruin their own organs, then the rogan will go to them. And there is a lot of people like that. A patient that smoke goes down the list when someone with Cistic Fibrosis need a transplant. Become a Donor, it will likely help people who really need it and don't deserve it.

Smoker's deserve a second chance too, they're people just like you and me. Most of them are probably good and decent and have people that love them, so what if they made a mistake when they were younger they haven't been able to fix. Would you deny someone with high cholesterol and heart disease a new heart just because they've eaten too much fatty food over the course of their life? Don't be so fucking high and mighty.

edit- I've marked down everything as being good for donation except my corneas. Call me irrational, but I don't want them taking my eyes!
(troll mode on)

blind people deserve a second chance too! your going to take that away from them from not donating your eyes?!?!

selfish brat, how would you like it if you couldn't see?!?!?!? Don't be so fucking high and mighty!

My opinion; I'm dead.
If my organ will improve someone's quality of life, they're welcome to it.

Those who need it due to self-inflicted reasons have to prove they have given up smoking/drinking etc. But still, I'd have no problem with them taking my Liver so long as I didn't need it any more.
Exactly my views on it. Sure, they may go to someone who isn't all that deserving.
But hey, who am I to disapprove? I'm dead and nobody will know that my organs went to them.

Have fun with them I say. >_>

I say this as a non-smoker and an occasional social drinker, Dont be so judgemental. Smokers are people too and have famlies who love them. we all have our little vices and to be denied life-saving treatment because we made some bad choices that didnt hurt other people is just plain wrong.

Whats next? denying organs to fat people because they made themselves sick by eating too much? and where do you draw the line? i'm a cabbie and might well get lung cancer due to diesel fumes, would you deny me your lungs because it was my choice to be a cabbie?

Seriously either donate your organs or dont, dont start wanting to be able to decide who is worthy of them and who isnt.

Why is organ donation such a big issue?
When you die, you die.
You're not going to be "Oh, I wish my heart would've been sent to that girl who I fell in love in first grade".
You're probably not going to be thinking.
So yes, I support organ donation, in fact,I think everybody should do it.

That is a down side to being an organ donor. Two things I have against it are the fact that I don't know who ends up with my body parts, and I want my body to be respected, not harvested. I am an organ donor for the time being. I have not changed it yet because I'm young enough to feel immortal. However, I am an avid blood donor and give blood as often as I can, so I guess that makes me a hypocrite.

In the end life isn't fair. That's why the generous should be honored.

OP, have you ever though that maybe, just maybe the fact that a person got a second chance to live thanks to your organs would make them question their lives? That they would change their life style, begin a new, "better" life?

IMO, I don't really care who gets my organs as long as they will be saved.

But children should have priority.

What a wierd thought, afaik things like smokers/alcoholics are set lower down the list, but to even be considered they need to stop smoking/drinking.

And, while it might be unlikely, if the only people who need your lungs/liver are smokers and alcoholics, what are you gunna do, say 'Oh hell no!' and take them to valhalla with you?

I'm all for Organ donation, but I do have one provision, whoever needs them gets all of them.

That way its less the gift of life and more a hostile takeover!

I'm an organ donor myself but I am a specific donor. I am only giving my lungs, kidneys, and liver. The rest of my organ are staying inside me so that is something for my family to bury. But they whole point in giving organs is to give a second chance. Somebody screws their second chance, oh well. I'm dead so what do I care what happens to my other organs?

So what do you think about Organ Donoring?
Do you agree with me?
Shud there be restrictions on Organ Donoring like make it only family/friends can have organs?
theyre really strict in some places. to even be on the list you have to quit smoking/drinking for lung/liver transplants.
personally, i'd give my body to medical science. if someone can cure cancer or harvest stem cells from an adult body, and use mine to find out how, then yes. do i want another person using my organs? not really.

What if the child grows up and starts smoking or doing drugs? It's not out of the realm of possibility.

organs never go to waste
if someone recieves your organs, that means they have gone tothe transplnt society and they have proved
A) they really need the organ
B) they really deserve the organ ( a smoker, drug user, would have very little chance of getting one)
c) they really could use it (it will extend natural life for at least several years)

donate ur organs, they are never waste, at least no more than if you were buried with them and left to rot

Unfortunately, perpetuating most myths of those sort fall close to being criminally stupid.

What about your corneas? They're one of the most transplanted tissues and no one will miss them because even open caskets are pretty much universally close eyed.

For starters, lung cancer and emphysema patients usually aren't give lung transplants. They're usually given chemo or oxygen tanks. If there's so much cancer tissue in your lungs that they have to remove them completely you're pretty much a walking corpse, and not worth organs.

I really wish we would move into an opt-out system in the U.S, with a "maybe" option.

As far as I'm concerned they can take me to a chop shop and leave some skin and bones left. Maybe make a commemorative bar of soap out of my body fat.
