What is this about she can't turn on her fire proof armor until her boyfriend says it's okay? Just asking. Not familiar with the game, but just watched the review on escapist.
To Be Fair, You do spend time in Norfair without the Varia Suit in Super Metroid so it could be Nintendo just testing your reflexes.

Also, Samus primarily works for the Galactic Federation meaning she has to observe the chain of command and their regulations when a CO is on site which is what has allowed her to enjoy so many freedoms on her missions because she plays by the rules.

We do the same thing with private mercenary contractors.
But isn't that where you find the varia suit.

I am also declaring bullshit on the last part. This game takes place after super metroid. Samus has already saved the universe multiple times. Some co that ain't shit to me? Telling me what to do? Saying I can't use my don't get boiled alive suit. GTFO That is some awful writing there. Why Samus works alone? Cause she gets shit done, Doesn't need any punk ass holding her back.

No, you find the Varia Suit in Super Metroid in Kraids Lair after you beat him (on a side note, you find the Varia Suit in the original Metroid in Brinstar just before you head to Kraids Lair).

Also, would you rather they just take all her power ups away yet again for no reason?

A friend of mine said, and I quote, "They show without her power suit for more than ten seconds, and that's bad." I'm getting the feeling that most people are calling it sexist because they want it to be sexist. Haven't played the game, though, so what do I know?

Also, we should all come clean that, if they hadn't used the permission system, we'd all be complaining "WTF she got amnesia again?"

Yeah, yeah it is. It's basically saying that a woman can't operate without a man telling her what to do.

Also you might want to watch The Spoony Ones' review of "The Other M". His words go down to pretty much this: "Fuck the manga, Metroid is a video game, not a goddammed graphic novel. Team Ninja raped Samus."

From what I've seen, there's no way Samus would have reacted like that to Ridley. It's completely out of character. When Samus meets Ridley, the following happens. She introduces that lizard to the business end of her PLASMA CANNON, shoves it down his throat, and pulls the trigger until he doesn't look like Ridley any more. She doesn't freeze up until some man turns up to try and rescue her, and only snap out of it at the last possible minute. My girlfriend hasn't even played a metroid game before, and she cringed with embarrassment at the scene. That's not recognisable as Samus.

She's not crying. She's surprised. If I were to have killed something 5 fucking times and it still didn't die. I'm pretty sure i'd be afraid too. Ridley is basically like a Horror Character. He keeps coming back after he's dead. Besides, we've never known what Samus's reaction is. Ridley killed her Parents as a young child. PTSD anyone? It's not sexist. People are just blowing it WAY Out of Proportion.

She's killed Ridley 4 times by that point! We bloody well do know what her reaction is! To KILL HIM AGAIN! I could understand that she'd be surprised at the buggers resilience, and maybe be taken aback but it depicts her as a little, meek girl (literally!), who cannot even respond until Captain man comes in spouting one liners in an attempt to save her. Samus is not a little meek girl. She is a hardened bounty hunter who blasts anybody that tries to kill her. Every game that isn't Other M shows us this. By all means show her emotional side, but don't turn her into a whimpering child. That's simply not who she is.

I'd like to point out something. This isn't me defending or condemning her characterization, but rather pointing out the lack thereof in her previous adventures. How do you know she wasn't panicking when she fought him previously?

It's not that she wasn't, because we don't know that. It's that you as the player were not, and being that she had no voice in previous titles, the players projected their expectations of what she was onto her without ever knowing what she was, judging Samus by how they used her and not necessarily by how she was.

You know, that's fair - and I'd have been totally fine with her bricking herself as she fought him - because I could see that as being consistent with a: being human and b: being Samus. But whether or not we know if she's panicking, we -do- know that she at least didn't freeze up until someone tries to rescue her. Because it simply doesn't happen in any of the other games. So yes, maybe she panics - but she still acts. We can say that for certain.
