Out of This World Creator Reveals New Game

After an absence of more than a decade, Out of This World [http://www.amazon.com/Out-This-World-PC/dp/B0009J2Q3G/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1276618781&sr=1-5] creator Eric Chahi is coming back with a brand new game.

My secret shame: I don't care about Eric Chahi [http://www.e3expo.com] is making a new game.

Announced by Populous [http://www.ubi.com]," Chahi said. "The game is set in an extreme version of planet Earth where nature unleashes her power in a much more violent way than what we are used to. Tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, volcanic eruptions are what the days are made of for the people of Dust."

"In this kind of God game, users will play with powers to manipulate the world around them. Ground, water, lava, fire, plants and trees model the world like a child playing sand castles on the beach," he continued. "With such powers, players will help their people resist, expand and migrate so they can accomplish their quest to find a safe place."

The trailer for Project Dust looks cool but what makes it particularly noteworthy, if you haven't picked up on it by now, is the fact that it's being made by Eric Chahi. Chahi is kind of like the game industry's Harper Lee: He worked on a couple of small projects in the 80s before creating the brilliant and acclaimed Heart of Darkness [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_World_%28video_game%29], after which he effectively walked away from the industry. He's had a hand in a couple of Out of This World update projects in recent years, but Project Dust will be his first new game in well over a decade.

Will the old magic still flow through his fingers? We'll find out next year; Project Dust is targeted for release in the spring of 2011 on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC. Who wants to bet the game gets attacked because you're able to inflict earthquakes on black people?

So it's like Black and White but without the creature? Could be interesting. But is looks like a small game, if it gets released on XBLA and PSN instead of retail, right?

Intresting...I agree with above comment like Black and White, minus creature...which could actually be pretty good!

Oh God, I've been waiting for a game like this for so long! Finally, finally!

Sure it will. Especially considering what just happened with the Hoops and Yoyo or whatever they're called talking card.

As a huge fan of Populous:The Beginning, I approve completely.

Might even be fun. I loved the terrain-manipulation spells... Not to mention fuckin' volcano. And erosion. And earthquake. And bridge. My big 4...

Creating huge bridges of land between mountains (Say, 2 of my old volcanoes) that go right through the middle of enemy houses was awesome. Using non-combat terrain-manipulating spells to blow up houses =p

Let's see. This guy made Out of This World and Heart of Darkness and is going to make a spiritual sequel to Populous!? My interest in this project has now reached critical levels.

Edit: Also, Populous: The Beginning was pretty much completely different from it's prequels. Still a good game, but he said that Project Dust will be based on the original Populous.

Something, for instance, like the news that Eric Chahi [http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,751/] is making a new game.
YAY!

Boo...so DRM all around then. Wonder if people who buy it can actually play it this time?

I know him. I KNOW HIM! OH MAN! I still have that game on this computer, Another World! Not to mention, this actually looks like a good game. There aren't a lot of games I would call "good".

First thing I had thought was: black people in tribal outfits? Better hope that Al Sharpton doesn't catch wind of this or the shit will hit the fan!

Hell, everyone remembers the Resident Evil 5 racism press storm...

Game looks quite interesting.

A god game where you control all elements and such, to fight elements and such. I'm intrigued.

Also, the title is still a working title, but they have "actual ingame footage" ready? Pretty sure that was just cutscenes... If it's not, I'm impressed, very impressed...

The second I read that I lost all interest.

I'll stick with game companies that don't require a constant internet connection on their single player games :/.

First RUSE and now this...I want these games but I can't support those jackasses :(. (I can think of no more accurate word for anyone who thinks that DRM is a good idea, it hasn't improved their sales but it has added a new level of pain-in-the-ass for legitimate customers).

I may get it on the PS3, I just find it a shame that I have this super badass PC and every good game that it could really do well on has enough DRM to joke a whale.

You children need to do your homework. Before Black and White was mediocre at best, Populous was spectacular. Oddly, it was a PC-based game that was better when ported to console (specifically, the SNES). Man... just talking about Populous makes me want to hook-up my SNES and start playing that game again...

First of all, what he said: Chahi invoked Populous for a reason, because it was goddamn brilliant. This was back at the height of Bullfrog's power, when Peter Molyneux actually made games that rocked the world instead of just talking about it. In fact, games like Populous are precisely why Molyneux gets away with the shit he does now. It's like a "get out of jail free, forever" card.

Peter Molyneux could come over to my house and punch me in the mouth, and then he'd say, "Dude, I made Populous," and I'd invite him in for a drink.

I'd do the same for Chahi. And lucky for you kids, just because you weren't born in 1991 doesn't mean you can't sample the joys of his genius. Chahi released a 15th Anniversary Edition of Another World (the "official" name, even though the North American version was originally released as Out of This World for some reason) in 2006 and it works just fine on modern OSes. It can be played with either original or updated graphics and sound, it comes with some really cool extras and it's still an absolute work of art. Anyone who says games can't touch people the way a great book can should play it.

It's a bit hard to find at this point, but well worth the effort.

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony, then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished.

Wait, wrong series. :p
