I picked up Outland a couple days ago and I found it hard to put down.

The art style is really unique. I would describe it as Tron meets Native American art meets Ancient Roman art. The colors and the high contrast give an aesthetically pleasing experience unlike any other.

The story is pretty simple. The unnamed main character has been experiencing nightmares involving two goddesses destroying the world and he visits a shaman to interpret his dreams. He then goes on an epic adventure to stop his visions from becoming reality.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward. it could be best described as Castlevania meets Ikaruga without the free-roaming exploration which was a good idea since the developers did not use it as a excuse to pad gameplay. Main gimmick this game has is for the protagonist to be able to change colors to blue/light to red/dark. Maybe it is just me, but the whole light and dark mechanic was cool in LOZ: Twilight Princess but it just seems copy and pasted everywhere else. The purpose of this is to either not take damage from red or blue projectiles that match the current color the player is. This plays into combat by being the opposite color of the enemy but you take damage regardless of color. The horizontal slash allows for multiple attacks but the vertical slash makes the combat almost gamebreakingly easy. You collect coins from fallen enemys and you purchase health upgrades.

The boss battles are all uniquely varied and increase in difficulty as the game goes by.

The ingame menus are easy to navigate. The onscreen GUI is easy to understand. It does ripoff the the health system of zelda and measures health by the number of hearts.

In Conclusion, I had a lot of fun with Outland and I suggest you pick it up.

7.5/10

I had fun with it as far as I was able to get, but where the heck is the Guardian Key for the Underworld stage?
