(non-facetious answer: generally, male homosexuality is seen as a threat to the heteronormative status quo. female homosexuality - that conforms to women = feminine, at least - isn't, and is also something through which women can be objectified for male pleasure and exploited)

You know the average watcher of Coronation Street is more likely to BE female, right?

Anyway, I think the thing about this kiss is the story behind it rather than what it shows.

Because some people are so offended whenever anything doesn't fit neatly into their white-bread, bland, heteronormative, "everyone keeps to their own" mindset that they have to screech and yell or they'll feel like they're personally contributing to the destruction of everything of value in the world ("everything of value" meaning: Their white-bread, bland, heteronormative, "everyone keeps to their own" mindset).
