As many of you may or may not know we had a shooting in the US in Connecticut. For those outside of United States, what did you hear, what did you think, and what did the media show you?

Considering I tend to read the BBC, Guardian and Independent they all had a very similar view on it. They reported it was a tragic event, I felt as though their was little bias about gun laws etc in the initial reports. I believe one victim at least was a British kid so there was a small news segment from where he was from in England and the community there (angle of the report being look how far reaching this event was).
From what I've seen today the reports are on Obama giving a speech, saying he's giving a very clear sign for gun reform and that America can't keep going on like this. Something to that effect anyway.
I don't really read the more crazy, sensationalist papers like the Daily Mail, The Sun etc but I assume they will be reporting pretty much the same thing but use more emotive words and be a bit more hysterical.

Local news and papers are still talking about this even while we're gearing towards a general elections in January 22nd, which is really weird. News channels talking about facts for the most part, some reaction shots of broadcasters in the USA, the president there, parents who were effected, etc.
They also say that this will most likely change absolutely nothing in the laws of the USA and this is how the culture of the country is made. In my country there are more people who have handled firearms than in the USA and more who have a license to carry (compared to 1000 people), but much less civilian weapons than in the USA. It's because you need to work in a job that requires you to carry a weapon so a weapon permit can be given to you and for the most part it's handguns (and also single shot semi-automatic rifles).

Canadian here and I see it as people having absolutely no reason at ALL to carry automatic weapons. What could you possibly need something like THAT for that is constructive? I would like one reason that makes sense. Just one. And before you start this is not against people that like to go out hunting, this is against people who want semi freaking AUTOMATICS! THAT is the reason America is seen as gun crazy loons. It's the easy access to uneeded automatic weapons!
Thousands upon thousands die in America a year due to guns, even elementary children. Who are your *FUTURE*. Your *EVERYTHING*. So, enjoy looking at your automatic and reminding yourself of that every time you look at it I guess? Because your easy gun laws really DO COST INNOCENT LIVES!! and all those broken families will be paying the price for your "freedom" to own an automatic till the day they die themselves. Aaaanyway; English here, and opinion in general seems to be that it was a horrendous thing to happen, that the USA should probably do something about its firearms laws, but that in the end they lack the balls and as such, unnecessary tragedies like this will continue to happen.

Britsh here and I first heard about this on the Escapist R&P forums. A terrible thing but one of the first things that popped into my head when I saw it was "What a surprise, who could have possibly predicted this?". I hate to be one of those guys who instantly blames it all on lack of gun control but..........I blame it all on lack of gun control. I expected another one of these to happen and I still expect more shootings to happen, I think this was the third shooting in America that I had heard of that week though, I wasn't expecting it all to happen in the same week which was the most surprising thing about the whole situation.

I'm not going to get into the debate on how America is portrayed in the media and how some people in the world look at it ... that's an entirely different argument that never goes well.

From what I saw on BBC news, the emphasis seemed to be on Obama's speech and his emotions regarding the incident, rather than the incident itself (most likely as the BBC want to have all the facts about what happened first as they care more about truthful news rather than ratings). Wars in the Middle East aside, the news about gun incidents can be pretty rare here, as in a country where guns are banned, knives are the weapon of choice.
As much as I like the U.S, knowing that there is a much higher probability that someone passing me is carrying a gun scares me somewhat.

the bigger issue is the lack of support for community and healthcare. whos to say that a fe sessions of therapy that was unafforable could have stopped this and other situations from happening

it may be so that firearms are still fairly obtainable, and gun crime has popped up alot around sydney over the last year.phoenixlink said:

British/Scottish here. Heard about it the day it happened from BBC, and was still being discussed this lunch time on Daily Politics. In the discussion they had an American politician/campaigner/something making all these rather ridiculous points and suggestions such as...

My opinion is that it shouldn't take as many school shootings as it has for America to start getting its shit together and actually try to do something about the bloody problem, assuming they do so this time. It's getting to the stage where people I've talked to are expecting to hear about school shootings sooner or later.
