personally, i think the entire halo series is over hyped. i mean, they're alright games, but they're glitchy, the story is meh, as are graphics (3's an improvement, but not by much). the game play was... okay. characters and enemies were interesting, but then again they were interesting when Metroid Prime and Half-life had them. it's an average series at best, and a worthless rip-off of better titles with better stories, graphics, and design at worst.
assassin's creed...was Prince of Persia, sands of time with more people. over hyped.
Gears of War was, like Halo, alright. that's it. it was a fun, if repetitive, run of the mill third person shooter with amped up graphics and violence. fun for a bit, but then i felt like i was playing Halo.
what else, what else...
Mario games! i honestly do understand why Mario games are popular, it was one of the first game series, but SMG was only fun and new and exciting for about 50 stars, and then you get bored out of your mind. and if i have to hear about an upcoming game with the words "yoshi's" and "island" in the title, i'll kill as many people as i can get my hands on before the cyanide pill under my tongue takes effect.
Devil May Cry, possibly the most stereotypical "anime" game of all time. sure it isn't based on an anime, but for goodness sake, the protagonist is a and i quote "mysterious white haired dream-boat who wields a sword as long as his body is tall", who turns out to be the son of someone really important. christ above, he even has a long-lost brother.
super smash bros., a good series, but one over which too many fans circle-jerk. it's fun, it's just not THAT fun.
can't think of any more at the momment, maybe i'll make another post later.
